Notes and Nuggets From Tuesday’s Panthers Training Camp Practice

HEALTH WATCH

  • TE Greg Olsen was not on the field for the second straight day. Olsen suffered back spasms after Sunday’s practice and the hope is he’ll be fine after a couple days of rest.

  • WR Stephen Hill had the day off to rest his surgically repaired knee.

  • DT Kyle Love sat out after suffering an undisclosed injury late in Monday’s practice.

  • DE Charles Johnson and RB Fozzy Whittaker returned after leaving Monday’s practice early with apparent heat-related issues.

  • WR Brenton Bersin (ribs), TE Ed Dickson (groin), S Dean Marlowe (hamstring), OL Chris Scott (shoulder), DE Rakim Cox (back), DE Larry Webster (hamstring) and LB Ben Jacobs (ankle) remained out.

TOP PLAY

Another day, another deep ball from QB Cam Newton hauled in by WR Devin Funchess. This one came late in the final practice in Spartanburg, a fitting way to finish what was a dominant camp by Funchess.

PLAYER NOTES

  • WR Philly Brown had his best day of camp, making a fantastic over-the-shoulder catch of a Newton bomb before adding a short touchdown toss from Newton.

  • WR Keyarris Garrett kept his strong week going by slipping past CB Teddy Williams to bring in a deep ball from QB Joe Webb.

  • TE Scott Simonson continued to make plays with the 1s, catching a couple passes from Newton in the day’s first team drill.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

RB Jonathan Stewart, FB Mike Tolbert, WR Ted Ginn Jr., C Ryan Kalil, LT Michael Oher, LB Luke Kuechly, LB Thomas Davis and S Kurt Coleman all had a veteran’s day off.

Meanwhile, Newton continued his streak of not taking a day off in 5-plus seasons.

“At least somebody came to practice today,” Newton playfully yelled during a team drill.

After getting burned in previous years by naming guys like WR Armanti Edwards and DE Frank Alexander training camp MVPs, Rivera stayed out of the prediction business for a second straight summer:

“I'm not going to name one. It's a bad luck thing.”

And if you’re superstitious, that’s a good thing for Funchess, who was easily the standout of camp.
