Panthers’ Training Camp Preview: Defensive Line

Part 6 of a position-by-position Panthers’ training camp preview. Who’s a lock, who will be in a battle and who’s a long shot?

With Greg Hardy in Dallas (see you on Thanksgiving, Greg), a pass- rushing partner for defensive end Charles Johnson remains up for grabs. Looking for someone to stand out among Frank Alexander, Kony Ealy, Wes Horton, and Mario Addison will be the most interesting camp battle on a line that has more than half of its roster spots decided.

Locked In

Johnson, Alexander, Horton, Ealy, Addison, Dwan Edwards, Star Lotulelei, Kawann Short, Colin ColeThrough 15 games, the postseason and this spring, the Panthers are still waiting for someone to emerge from the group of Alexander, Ealy, Horton and Addison. If there’s a favorite, it’s Alexander. Ealy, who flashed at the end of his rookie year with three sacks in as many games, also has a shot. But when camp kicks off, this will be a platoon situation. On the inside, Lotulelei, Short, Edwards, and Cole give the Panthers arguably the deepest rotation in the league.

Facing a Fight

Kyle Love, Micanor RegisLove’s experience, including two seasons as a starter with the Patriots, should help him earn a spot on the final roster. But Regis, who had a good spring, could push love through camp.

Long Shots

Chas Alecxih, Terry Redden, Rakim Cox, Steve Miller, Arthur MileyMt. Everest-level climbs are ahead for these guys. The ends (Cox, Miller, and Miley) could just be fighting for a spot on the practice squad.

Part 2: Tight ends

Part 3: Quarterbacks

  1. The roster crunch may limit the Panthers to carrying only 9 D-Linemen, but with the age of Cole and Edwards, they really need a 5th DT, most likely Love, if they can fit him in.
