Rapid Reactions: Panthers Hold Off Packers, Remain Unbeaten

WHAT IT MEANS

Thought that was going to be easy? Yeah, right.

For the second time in less than a week, the Carolina Panthers watched a double-digit lead disappear. This time, they didn't need to go to overtime. With DT Kawann Short in his face, Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was intercepted by LB Thomas Davis inside the 5-yard line with less than two minutes to play. That preserved a 37-29 win and the Panthers' unbeaten record.

Carolina also extended its regular-season win streak to 12 games, the longest in franchise history. At 8-0, they're now two games ahead of anyone in the NFC, and with the tiebreak, take a three-game lead over the Packers.

In the Super Bowl era, all 21 teams who have started 8-0 made the playoffs. 12 went to the Super Bowl. Eight won it.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

--The Panthers scored at least 20 points for the 8th time this season. They scored 20 or more just eight times last year.

--QB Cam Newton rushed for his 38th career touchdown, tying him with Kordell Stewart for 2nd-most by a QB since 1970. Hall of Famer Steve Young tops that all-time list with 41. Newton also inched closer to Young for the most games with a passing and rushing touchdown since 1970. Newton now has 28. Young had 31. Newton also became the 3rd QB in NFL history with 15 games with two-plus passing touchdowns and at least one rushing touchdown (Young, Fran Tarkenton).

--WR Philly Brown caught his 3rd touchdown pass of the season. He had two as a rookie last year.

--DT Kawann Short picked up his 6th sack of the season. He totaled five sacks during his first two seasons.

--CB Charles Tillman forced a fumble for the fifth straight time against the Packers.

HEALTH WATCH

--LB Luke Kuechly tweaked his right ankle twice. After each, he had it taped up and then returned.

--CB Josh Norman was slow to get up after falling hard on his right shoulder in the 4th quarter. He missed one play before running back on the field.
