Report: Tiquan Underwood to Join Panthers

Dave Gettleman is doing it again. After sitting out the first wave of free agency, the Panthers’ general manager is riding the second wave.A day after Carolina signed receiver Jerricho Cotchery, Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun reported early Friday afternoon the team has agreed to terms with wideout Tiquan Underwood. The move seemed likely after Underwood visited with the Panthers Thursday. He’s essentially a replacement for Ted Ginn, who signed with Arizona last week.Like Ginn, Underwood has blazing speed with questionable hands. He hasn’t returned many kicks since his first two seasons in Jacksonville, but he’ll likely get a shot to compete with Kenjon Barner and Kealoha Pilares for the Panthers’ return spot.Underwood could also win the No. 3 or No. 4 receiving spot, which would give quarterback Cam Newton a deep threat weapon like he had with Ginn.In his five seasons in the league, Underwood has been released eight times, but the 27-year-old totaled a decent 52 receptions and six touchdowns the last two years in Tampa Bay.Most are familiar with Underwood for his hi-top fade and for what happened just before the 2012 Super Bowl. A member of the Patriots, Underwood was cut just hours before the game. He did end up receiving an AFC Championship ring.On Twitter: @TiUnderwoodWatch: 85-yard touchdown reception Why the hi-top?: “I wanted a different haircut, and although I know the high top faded away and not a lot of people have it, so that’s why I chose it. I know it’s going back 20 years, but I like it, and a lot of my friends like it.” – Underwood
