Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Ron Rivera’s Former Teammate Isn’t a Cam Newton Fan (Updated)

Two months before he was named MVP of Super Bowl XX, Bears' defensive end Richard Dent "sung" this verse during The Super Bowl Shuffle:

"The sackman’s comin'. I’m your man Dent. If the quarterback’s slow, he’s gonna get bent. We stop the run, we stop the pass, I like to dump guys on their [ass]."

So it's ironic that a guy who helped make a music video before his team had won as many games as the Panthers already have this season now has a problem with Carolina's celebration-prone quarterback Cam Newton.

"It's disrespect," Dent told USA Today's Jarrett Bell.

"Act like this is what you’re getting paid to do. But these kids, that’s what you get in the Twitter, Facebook world. It’s 'Look at me!'

While the 55-year-old Dent may be shaking his fist at the Selfie Generation, one of his Super Bowl-winning teammates has no problem with Newton's antics.

Panthers coach and former Bears linebacker Ron Rivera continues to tell Newton and the rest of the roster to keep their personalities. The funny thing is, based on Dent's comments, his personality sounds like it hasn't changed much in 30 years.

“I’m going to knock your ass out of the game. That would’ve been my approach," Dent said. "At some point in the game — not with a cheap shot — I’m going to try to get a shot that puts you out for the day. That’s the risk when you want to showboat all the time."

When asked about Dent's comments on Tuesday, Rivera smiled and said:

"I think that’s fine. Richard’s a Hall of Famer. He’s entitled to his opinion."

But Newton's coach then quickly defended his quarterback.

"It’s no longer important to befriend a child going through cancer. It’s not enough to go out and play Santa Claus and go to a high school and give money away to a school. It’s not enough. That’s unfortunate that we’ve gotten past that," Rivera said.

"I thought that’s how we wanted to judge our athletes as good people but that’s not enough for us, I guess."
