After Ravens receiver Steve Smith hauled in an 80-yard touchdown Sunday against the Bengals, what did he have on his mind? Dave Gettleman is trying to recover the Panthers financial woes…. Third, Steve Smith didn’t get cut because of his talent, his chip on his shoulder, or money. He got cut because he doesn’t shut the hell up when he needs to. The players and coaches didn’t want a captain like that. Get a clue

I watched every game except one last year and it seemed like Smitty had command of the sidelines; he was the senior member of the team. Honestly I think it was all about Rivera not having the stones to assert himself as coach, he was incapable of reigning Smitty in and had to cry to Daddy Getts to get rid of him. I like Gettleman and I like Smitty so it is what it is, but in hindsight I don’t see how getting rid of him has benefited the team.

I like smitty too but he wasn’t even our leading receiver anymore and we desperately need the cap space that got freed up in the next season.

They have a not very good line with a below average rush attack at best which means we can make Falco’s life miserable and Smith will be the one trying to bail him out on short routes and getting lit the F up by that defense. We’ll no doubt be in nickel the majority of the game and all over his mouthy ass. Not gonna be a good day for 89…..I can def see why other teams fans always hated him so much

It’s kind of like he’s grandfathered in as the captain year after year. Let’s face it…..no disrespect to my favorite panther of all time, but he had to go because he was a distraction.

  141. JamesHines  Maybe I missed it..but was there a drastic change in his behavior over the last 2 yrs that he suddenly became expendable. He may have regressed but seeing him making plays with a good QB in Baltimore makes me think he has something left in the tank still !

MangoPanther JamesHines No question Smitty is and was a good football player.  I really think the problem was two fold, first Steve’s dominating personality and antics did not fit well with the Rivera or Mr G.  Even though Smitty mentored and worked with Cam in the end it was all about Smitty.  That is not good for a team or any players and especially for Cam the Franchise QB of the future for the Panthers.  Second, Smitty was seen as deterrent to new WR’s, he did not want the franchise to upgrade to anyone who Smith thought would compete with himself, then the MONEY comes into play. Did Smith offer to take make a contract adjustment?  I don’t think so.  
    Needless to say I too liked Smitty, his play was dependable, but I also think the team needed to down grade him and move on.  It was unfortunate that Mr G and Smith did not have conversation prior to his release and I hope Smith gets a chance to retire as a Panther, because he was just that a Panther. 
    For his sake I hope he tones it down and Cools it. He is doing himself an injustice.

To cut him we just had to pay him the $9 million in gurantees he had left. We are talking $5 million this year as opposed to $7 (that $2mm paid for Avant AND Cotch) and $4million next year instead of $9 million. And zero million in 2016 as opposed to $9mm. He wasn’t worth it. He had one good game in Baltimore but we’ve seen this before

  153. JamesHines No, Smittty will always be for himself first that is how he succeeded, it takes a lot for a small guy to make the grade.  That said, the money problem, and the leadership problem was more of a deterrent in my opinion.

I never got the feeling from the games or reading anything online that he was anti -establishment or harbored any feelings towards Gettleman until after he was released.

I watched you so many times get right in the face of other players friend or foe but you brought out the best in everyone around you and that I miss like Hell. I hope you do come in and have a great game because I will be there cheering loud for you and only you from the Ravens but I hope My Panther’s kick the Ravens ass because I bleed Blue,Black,and Silver and will until I die or they move away which will piss me off. Just to let you know your Panther fans will no matter what respect,love,and wished like hell you could finish in Carolina whether you really did get worse or if you stayed great hated seeing you go prob. more then you didn’t want to leave,kinda like the Green Bay,and Colts with Brett Farve,and Peyton Manning. The fans didn’t want them to leave nor did they but the business is a super young mans game, not as much wear and tear on there bodies and you know that more severe injuries occur to older guys. To have you come out and play like you always have is great,but all it takes is that one big hit,twist of the ankle,or knee,or better fracture your back the way I did and sometimes not be able to walk sucks for you,but even more so for a team to pay you more money then 20 men make in a year,for you to sit on the sidelines and not play just makes business sense. I totally think the Panthers front office sold you out with all you fans and hell yes I am mad as hell about it still,but remember man that the players didn’t have anything to do with you being released they live day to day as well not knowing that if they will have a job tomorrow, unlike you who not only played for the same team for 13 years as a receiver in the NFL, but Ravens didn’t waste anytime making room for you which I don’t blame them I would have and prob. made you my highest paid player for at least a two year contract if not more. you are a special breed and need to know that we Panther’s fans still and always will love you. One thing I am sure you heard at some point in your great career, (DON”T SHOW YOUR ASS SHOW YOUR CLASS) I had almost every football coach from middle school- collage say that. The reason our team was told this is because that is Karma you show your ass you will get bitten, Show your class go out there and lay it down man then you can look straight up at Carolina’s front office people and let them know you know they made a big mistake. I hoped that you got to retire as a Panther but the business sucks in that way.I swore I was ever going to watch another Panther’s game and was going to back to my first favorite team the Cowboys when they let you go! Then i thought about it and was like no way can I pull for Tony Romo and anything the Cowboys do now.  Unlike the cowboys of the past like these guys —-> Emmit Smith , Michael Irving ,&Troy Akiman. Man please Know us fans have your back but just remember what the Panther’s organization has given you, a great life that many wished for. I am in no way saying they did it all for you because you had to do all the physical work and a lot of mental work as well ! Who knows if you didn’t go to the Panthers and went somewhere else and the coach didn’t like you and cut you loose or got hurt and never had another chance! You would be out here like me working your butt off to just get by with what you have to get by not what you want,until you put in 17 years doing one job and not always fun hell maybe 65% of the time my job is fun. Unlike yours where you get to play a game and everyone loves to watch some Smitty even if they hate you. We love your ball skills,your toughness,and that swagger you have. You just have to watch as a fan because at any point you can make a hell of a play and make a boring game have life in a blink of an eye. Just like in 2003 when you believers out of everyone by almost making the Eagles look like they were beaten down by YOU, and Jake Delhomme and that defense back then. these are some other D-Ass moves from the front office of Carolina Panthers. I was pissed when they let Delhomme go at least they could have used him as a back up but no they kept Clausen. Even more  pissed when it was Julis Peppers at the time he was the best defensive end in the NFL period….  Steve I hope you the best sure do miss you man and be that man you are. Oh and please go over after the game and just whisper something in Kelvin Benjamin about he needs to be that fire you were because us fans will hate him if he don’t make it look as easy as you did. Plus he came from FSU so he needs a little love from a former great Panther like you . Just like in 2003 when you believers out of everyone by almost making the Eagles look like they were beaten down by YOU, and Jake Delhomme and that defense back then. these are some other D-Ass moves from the front office of Carolina Panthers. I was pissed when they let Delhomme go at least they could have used him as a back up but no they kept Clausen. Even more  pissed when it was Julis Peppers at the time he was the best defensive end in the NFL period….  Steve I hope you the best sure do miss you man and be that man you are. Oh and please go over after the game and just whisper something in Kelvin Benjamin about he needs to be that fire you were because us fans will hate him if he don’t make it look as easy as you did. Plus he came from FSU so he needs a little love from a former great Panther like you . GO PANTHERS SORRY STEVE BUT THE PANTHERS are my Team and my boys and I might yell at you tough my screen come this Sunday but I hope my boys kick you Ravens ASS !!!! Nothing towards you but you wear,purple,black,and white now so you fall under that stigma to of being the enemy. Kick every other teams ass and we will see you in the Super Bowl this year.
