For Allen, Panthers Traded Pick They Probably Wouldn’t Use

DE Jared Allen is 33 and coming off the worst year of his career. He started this season with no sacks and just five tackles, and while Chicago's 3-4 defense wasn't a fit, maybe he's just done. Will trading for a guy in his 12th season be worth the risk for the Panthers?

Well, when you look at Dave Gettleman's draft history, it appears the only risk Carolina took was a financial one. And even that was minimal.

Because the Bears paid Allen his roster bonus of $11.5 million to play in just three games, the Panthers have to cover less than $900,000 of his 2015 base salary. Then, after the season, they can cut bait instead of paying him $8.5 million next year.

Now about that 2016 6th-round pick the Panthers gave the Bears. There's a good chance Gettleman wouldn't have ended up using it except as a bargaining chip another time.

Here's what the Panthers did in the final two rounds of the draft since Gettleman took over as general manager:

2013
6th — Drafted RB Kenjon Barner
7th — Choice went to Oakland in July 2012 for WR Louis Murphy

2014
6th — Drafted RB Tyler Gaffney
7th — Gettleman gained this choice by trading LB Jon Beason to the Giants, but then gave it to Minnesota to move up in the 5th round to take DB Bené Benwikere
7th — Choice went to San Francisco in Aug. 2012 for S Colin Jones

2015
6th — Choice went to St. Louis to move up in the 2nd round for WR Devin Funchess
7th — Choice went to Oakland to move up in 4th round for OT Daryl Williams

So Gettleman went into his three drafts with five picks in the final two rounds. He used two of them, eventually dealing Barner to the Eagles for a conditional 2015 7th-round pick the Panthers didn't get and losing Gaffney to the Patriots. But because he was a 6th-round pick, it's unlikely Gettleman is regretting that one all that much.

Now let's look at what the Panthers have done in the first five rounds under Gettleman:

2013
1st — DT Star Lotulelei
2nd — DT Kawann Short
4th — G Edmund Kugbila
5th — LB A.J. Klein

2014
1st — WR Kelvin Benjamin
2nd — DE Kony Ealy
3rd — G Trai Turner
4th — S Tre Boston
5th — Traded up for DB Bené Benwikere

2015
1st — LB Shaq Thompson
2nd — Traded up for WR Devin Funchess
4th — Traded up for OT Daryl Williams
5th — LB David Mayo
5th — RB Cameron Artis-Payne

For the sake of discussion, let's include Benjamin. So of those 14 picks, seven are starters. Kugbila is the only one who's no longer on the roster.

Gettleman clearly believes there's value in the first five rounds of the draft. The 6th and 7th? Not so much. He already sent Seattle his 7th in 2017 for WR Kevin Norwood and now his 6th next year is gone.

Perhaps Gettleman was stressing Sunday night after he watched Charles Johnson, his best pass rusher, carted to the locker room. But he likely won't lose any sleep after giving away a pick he likely wouldn't have used in exchange for the NFL's active sack leader.
