Hoverboard Talk Dominates Monday

Because the Carolina Panthers have an NFC Championship to get ready for, there may be more important things to chat about. But we have plenty of time to break down the matchup with Carson Palmer and Cardinals over the next few days, so let's talk hoverboards. Besides, they were the hot topic Monday at Bank of America Stadium.

Yes, pun intended.

YouTube searches reveal plenty of scary videos featuring hoverboards BLOWING UP and ON FIRE, so when coach Ron Rivera caught wind of those, he brought out a ban.

Yet ...

"They’re floating around here somewhere," receiver Philly Brown said. "Where there’s a will, there’s a way."

Indeed.

In this case, Rivera's ruling covers only team facilities. When players are on their own, they're free to ride. And they do.

Because he was one of the few Panthers cornered by the media Monday, tight end Ed Dickson was left to answer around two dozen hoverboard questions from a group of about a half-dozen reporters.

Here's that Q&A, edited for brevity:

Q: How long did you have yours before the ban?

ED: "I had just got mine a couple days (before that), but I can't bring mine in the building anymore ... He took the keys and said he didn't want them in the building anymore."

Q: Are they really that dangerous?

ED: "A lot of people think athletes are good athletes, but they're kinda clumsy sometimes. "

Q: Do you let your kids ride one?

ED: "No, my son, no. It's too flimsy. Whenever you get on it, you can fall off and hurt yourself pretty badly. My son, I tried to teach him how to ride it, but he's too goofy with it, so I'm like no thank you."

Q: Are you worried yours will catch on fire?

ED: "No, I didn't buy the cheap one. There's a lot of knockoffs that don't use real batteries or something like that and they catch on fire. I was aware, though. The first couple nights when I saw it caught on fire, I was like I'm not going to plug this in."

Q: Do guys care they can't ride around in here now?

ED: "I don't think people would take it to heart like that. This locker room, we're a group of kids and like sticking together like a band of brothers. There was a time where we all went on our hoverboards and went to a food truck together. I think it was Bené (Benwikere) who got 25 of us to go to the food truck. We took that type of thing and we ran with it ... It started with like four people and then went to text messages saying, 'Get your hoverboard, let's go.'"

Q: Coach said there was drag racing going on?

ED: "There were some sort of things that go on in the locker room and I can't give all of the secrets of the locker room. It's competition and when you deal with a lot of men and you get something new like that, we had fun with it. We didn't take it to heart when he banned them. We knew that with it being a safety issue, we knew to do the right thing."
