In his 11 previous seasons, this is how many games defensive end Jared Allen has missed because of injury:
- 2004 - 1 (torn MCL)
- 2005 - 0
- 2006 - 0
- 2007 - 0
- 2008 - 0
- 2009 - 0
- 2010 - 0
- 2011 - 0
- 2012 - 0
- 2013 - 0
- 2014 - 1 (pneumonia)
Now, less than three weeks after he was traded to the Panthers, he'll miss just the third game of his career because of injury.
Allen was on Friday ruled out of Carolina's Week 6 trip to Seattle. A pinched nerve in his lower back, which he suffered in the walk-thru before the Panthers' played at Tampa Bay, has caused him to lose some feeling in his foot.
"He's getting better, but not to where we need him so he can be effective," coach Ron Rivera said Friday. "Maybe in the playoffs you'd play him in this condition, but not now. We have plenty of time, we have a lot of games left to play and we'll see what happens."
Earlier this week, Allen told reporters "if I can walk, I can play." He can walk right now, and if it were up to him, he'd likely play, but the Panthers are electing to be prudent instead of putting him on a plane for a cross-country trip.
Defensive end Wes Horton, who was released two weeks ago to make room for offensive line depth ahead of the Bucs game, will make his third start in the past year against the Seahawks.
