What They’re Saying Around Carolina’s Camp: Aug. 7

[vc_row]Throughout training camp, BBR will highlight coverage from other outlets in Spartanburg covering the Panthers. If there’s something we don’t get to or you absolutely must read or see, you’ll find it here. We’ll also be sharing some resources with Jeremy Igo of Carolina Huddle, and his unique work will lead off these “Around Carolina’s Camp” segments.Today …

  • Rookie gets first look at left tackle
  • Another rookie seeing increasing reps
  • This is keeping your eye on the ball

Elsewhere …Panthers.com catches up with receiver-turned-tight end Marcus Lucas:

“Being down in a three-point stance and blocking those big dudes on the inside – that’s pretty new to me. But when it comes to routes it’s very natural. I played a hybrid position in college so running those routes on the inside is coming along pretty well.”

Cam Newton was more energetic than usual Thursday. ESPN’s David Newton gauges what teammates make of Loud Cam:

“Anderson said Newton’s antics are good to a point, particularly during training camp when it gets monotonous.

But to say he’s a fan of it?

‘I don’t love it when he gets like that, because he’s a better quarterback when he’s focused on what we’re doing,’ Anderson said.”

The Charlotte Observer’s Joe Person details one of the reasons why Jerricho Cotchery isn’t in danger of losing his roster spot:

“While eating lunch Wednesday at Wofford, Cotchery had his ear buds in and was on his phone. When Avius Capers, an undrafted rookie from Charlotte, sat down across from him, Cotchery put down his phone and greeted Capers warmly.

It was a simple gesture, but the kind of thing that makes Cotchery so approachable for a young player.”

    1. He’s solidly sucking. Mario, Kony, and Frank all beat him on the reg. Ron is trying to cover it up with false praise, but everyone at the camp has said he’s little better than Byron. My fingers are crossed that Daryl will learn the left side quick enough and they’ll insert him during the bye week. I’m also still praying we’ll sign Jake Long

      1. Your absolutely right Ethan, and the only person who should be surprised about it is G-man, who went cheap again at LT, with probably worse results than last season. G-man has now passed on outstandingly athletic (though slightly small) LT’s in each of the last 2 drafts. Brown’s LG (because they have the top LT in the NFL in Joe Thomas) Joel Bitonio (6’4 1/4″, 302, 33 7/8″ arms, and 9 5/8″ hands, almost the same size as Jordan Gross) was recently rated as the NFL’s 3rd best OG, by BleacherReport.com, and was the 35th pick in the 2014 draft. In this years draft, G-man passed over the most athletic LT in the draft, Jake Fisher (6’6 1/8″, 306, 33 3/4″ arms, and 10 3/8″ hands) who lead all the draft’s OT’s with a 94.2 SPARQ (Speed, Power, Agility, Reaction, and Quickness) score, and was the #53 draft pick for the Bengals.

Daryl Williams isn’t an NFL LT, and may not even be an NFL RT, because of his very poor lateral movement, as shown by his 5.15-20 yard shuttle (the bottom 10% over the last 10 years for OT’s starts at 5.00), and an 8.18-3 cone (the bottom 10% starts at 8.17). These 2 numbers show his inability to to cut off speedy pass rushers to the outside. Williams 1.75-10 yard split is above average (average is 1.80), but he also had a below average 1.86-10 and a 1.89-10 (1.89 is the line for the bottom 10%). His 5.34-40 is also below average (average is a 5.24-40).

Jake Long is either washed up damaged goods, or else he want’s too much money, or another team would have signed him by now (even the Broncos passed on him after a workout).

        1. Bitino is better suited to be a guard, a position were stacked at and personally I’m happy with Benjamin instead of that guy…numbers numbers numbers, blah blah blah…numbers don’t play football. DW is going to be a solid RT. If DG didn’t see the guy he wants then he won’t take the consolation prize. Funchess and Shaq could both end up being way more valuable than Fisher. Not like we’re the only team that passed on him….Healthy or not, Jake Long isn’t going to sign anywhere right now and have to go to camp

    1. I agree, it’s not looking good for Williams roster chances, but Lucas isn’t big enough to play as an in-line TE. I see Lucas as a “Flex” (or “Move”) TE/H-Back, backing up Funchess, if he even makes the roster (he’s a longshot).
