Monday’s Panthers Practice Notes: Short Out Again; Safety Returns; a Surprise Fly-By

HEALTH WATCH

  • DT Kawann Short missed his second straight practice. He supposedly had a vet day Monday, but then stayed inside on Tuesday.

"He played a lot the other night and got bumped around pretty good," said coach Ron Rivera, who wouldn't say if Short's soreness affecting a specific body part. "He rested and (head trainer Ryan Vermillion) felt another day of rest would be good for him."

  • QB Derek Anderson, who's been the Panthers' fourth preseason game starter since 2012, missed his straight practice after taking a few shots against the Patriots.

"You talk about a guy who got hit a few times," Rivera said, "more times than he's used to. He's pretty sore."

  • DT Kyle Love didn't practice but worked on the side. Love returned from a concussion last week, but it's unclear if he's still feeling any of those effects.

  • DE Rakim Cox (back) and WR LaRon Byrd (concussion) remained out.

  • DE Ryan Delaire returned to work after missing Sunday's practice with an apparent left leg injury.

  • S Marcus Ball, who's been in and out of practice since suffering an apparent leg injury at Tennessee, was back in pads.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

Four A-10 "Warthog" fighter jets came out of nowhere to buzz the practice fields, Bank of America Stadium and Uptown Charlotte during the early portion of practice:

"That was pretty awesome," said Rivera, who then admitted, "We most certainly were caught off guard. You could kind of see everybody wondering what's going on."

In a statement, the FAA said: "Air Traffic Controllers approved the pilots' request to fly over the stadium after they departed from Charlotte Douglas International Airport at 11:35 am. The flight was headed to Valdosta, GA. An FAA employee incorrectly told an official at Charlotte Douglas International Airport that the flight was a practice flyover for a football game."

After sharing his thoughts with BBR on Sunday about Colin Kaepernick, Rivera again addressed the 49ers QB's national anthem sit-down.

"The national anthem is a very personal thing for me, obviously for specific reasons because of my father’s and my mother’s family and their service to the country," Rivera said.

"You have the right to do what you want to do because that’s what those men and women fought for, sacrificed for, and we should all be grateful for that."
