Breaking Down Michael Oher’s 3-Year Contract Extension

Good Deal for Both Sides

Michael Oher helped solidify the left side of the Panthers' offensive line in 2015, so the team solidified his future in Carolina.

The left tackle on Friday signed a 3-year extension that multiple reports say is worth $21.6 million.

Oher, who came to Charlotte with a 2-year, $7-million contract last spring, was set to make $2.35 million this season. Combine that with his new money and he's under contract through 2019 for $24 million.

That total value puts him 15th among left tackles, behind San Diego's King Dunlap ($28.0 million) and ahead of the rookie deal Eric Fisher signed with the Chiefs in 2013 ($22.2 million).

Not a Ton Guaranteed

The Panthers gave Oher $9.5 million in guarantees in the new deal, according to multiple reports. So with the $2.35 million he was already scheduled to make, the team's committed $11.85 million toward Oher.

Among left tackles, that guarantee puts him 19th, behind Dunlap ($13.0 million) and ahead of the amount Taylor Lewan got in his 2014 rookie deal with the Titans ($11.5 million).

What They Said

General manager Dave Gettleman, in a statement:

"We’re very pleased. Michael came in here last year and fit in extremely well. He really had a solid year. He’s in his prime right now and he’s healthy. He’s become a quality player for us."

Oher:

"I’m very excited. I really can’t wait to get to work. I don’t want to let these guys down. They believe in me."

Bill — do you think the Panthers expect Oher to improve as a run blocker next year or do you think they signed him to an extension happy to have a good pass blocker and very mediocre run blocker at LT? (I’m going off the PFF grading.) If it’s the former, do you know why Oher’s run blocking might have lagged last year? Conditioning, harder schemes, etc?

As long as they’re not treated as gospel, PFF ratings are a nice guide. He admittedly wasn’t good against the run this year, but they’re aware and at least trying to work on it.
