Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Is Daryl Worley Developing Faster Than Josh Norman Did With Panthers?

OK, I'll admit, that's a clickbaity title.

Also, judging something like that on less than one season and just three plays is a big stretch.

But stick with me through at least these three plays.

1.) Few Panthers fans have forgotten what happened at the end of what appeared to be a certain win at Buffalo during Week 2 of the 2013 season.

Before the advent of 'Riverboat Ron,' Carolina's coach gave the Bills a chance to rally in the final seconds, which is what they did when Josh Norman didn't switch with D.J. Moore:

The egregious error cost Norman a starting job for the second time in as many seasons, something he didn't earn back until midway through 2014.

That brings us to this year.

Days after the Panthers let the guy they helped turn into an All-Pro head to Washington for nothing, they went back-to-back-to-back with corners in the draft.

While Zack Sanchez had a forgettable rookie season, Ron Rivera began touting James Bradberry and Daryl Worley as the next Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short early last month. And with the Norman reunion now just days away, that analogy will likely come up a few more times before Monday night.

Anyway, onto the next play ...

2.) In their return from the bye, the Panthers beat the Cardinals, but not before this happened:

What you saw there was Worley failing to switch with Kurt Coleman.

3.) Fast forward to this past Sunday against the Chargers:

Not only did Worley learn from his mistake against Arizona, but he made what may have been the most underrated play of the win by knocking a two-point conversation out of the hands of future Hall of Famer Antonio Gates.

"One thing we always emphasize is turning to the man," Worley said. "When it doesn't feel like you can make a clean play on the ball, make a play through the man. And that's exactly what I did."

Added defensive coordinator Sean McDermott:

"That's a teaching point for us in terms of finishing a play, being willing to go to the ground with a big tight end. As a corner, we always want to finish plays, and finishing plays sometimes means in order to separate the man from the ball you've got to be willing to go to the ground, and he did that.

"And the communication he had with Kurt in the slot at the point was something we worked on."

Worley, who came in leading rookie corners with 66 tackles, finished with a game-high 10. Plus his first career interception.

"To watch Daryl play the way that he played — those are moments that will live with me forever," McDermott said. "It's kind of like your kids. It gives you chills because you say, 'Gosh, he's getting it. He understands.'"

Again, none of this is to say Worley is at Norman's level or he's guaranteed to get there. But with Norman about to celebrate his 29th birthday on Thursday, it has to be reassuring to the Panthers when they see 'light bulb' moments from the 21-year-old Worley.
