Pre-Camping with Dave Gettleman, Part 7: Running Backs

If left tackle is the shallowest spot on the Panthers’ roster, running back is close behind. Carolina sure has put a lot of its eggs in the Michael Oher and Jonathan Stewart baskets.Jonathan Stewart, at SeattleWith career rushing leader DeAngelo Williams now in Pittsburgh, Stewart heads to training camp as a starter for the first time in his career. As he proved while racking up 486 yards in the final five weeks of last season’s playoff push, a healthy Stewart can be of the better backs in the league. The bigger mystery involves the guys behind him.One of Spartanburg’s most important battles will feature Fozzy Whittaker, Jordan Todman and Cameron Artis-Payne in a fight for the No. 2 role. All have question marks. The two veterans are more scatback than workhorse. The rookie was the 15th back taken in the draft. Those options don’t necessarily inspire dreams of a new ‘Double Trouble,’ but general manager Dave Gettleman doesn’t agree with the idea that the run game may only go as far as Stewart can carry it.”We’ve got some nice depth at the running back position, whether (critics) want to understand that or not,” Gettleman said.He then referenced Artis-Payne, who led the SEC in rushing at Auburn last year:”You don’t rush for 1,600 yards in the SEC if you don’t know what you’re doing.”In actuality, the backfield should be ok as long as Stewart is.Including the postseason, he played 15 games last year. Concerns still hover above him, though, because of the 17 games he missed his previous two seasons. So it’s fair to wonder if the Panthers are truly insured in case something happens to their starter, right?”I’m not someone who sits here and says, ‘Oh, if he gets hurt, what are we going to do?’ I’m not doing that to myself, and I’m not doing that to my coaching staff,” Gettleman said.”He’s healthy right now. Stop looking at the glass as half empty. Jonathan is fine. I’m not even blinking on that.”[vc_row_inner inner_container=”” no_margin=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none” parallax=””][vc_column_inner fade=”” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”1/6″][gap size=”1.313em”][vc_column_inner fade=”” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”2/3″][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_inner fade=”” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”1/6″][gap size=”1.313em”]
