Dave Gettleman Not Likely to Push Panic Button … Again

[vc_row no_margin=”true”][vc_column width=”1/1″]In his 32 months as the Carolina Panthers’ general manager, Dave Gettleman has made 470 transactions. Not including rookies, practice squad moves and re-signings, 94 of those have been free agent additions. And how many were names fans had been clamoring for?

To answer the question, in terms of widespread name recognition, it’s probably Michael Oher. For best career, Charles Tillman. And if there’s a fan favorite, maybe Ted Ginn. Twice.

How about non-draft day deals?

Gettleman’s made two.

08/20/2014 Traded RB Kenjon Barner
10/04/2013 Traded LB Jon Beason

And waiver pick ups?

Five.

03/27/2015 Waiver claim Jonathan Martin
05/13/2014 Waiver claim DT Drake Nevis
10/21/2013 Waiver claim WR Tavarres King
08/02/2013 Waiver claim S Ricardo Silva
05/22/2013 Waiver claim LB Ryan Rau

So what’s the point?

Gettleman has a track record of doing what he’s often promised – he’s not going to push a panic button.

The prudent play is often the smartest. Folding instead of playing a hand isn’t always the right choice, either.

It’s easy to play general manager online and even easier when the results are in. All we know is what Gettleman has done in the past, and that’s a willingness to stay calm while the sky appears to be falling.

If he wasn’t aggressive when the franchise left tackle retired or after he cut the team’s best all-time player, he won’t be after Kelvin Benjamin’s season-ending knee injury.

Gettleman wasn’t made available to comment a day after losing his top receiver, but when coach Ron Rivera was asked Thursday if he felt the Panthers needed to bring in another wideout, he said:

“No. We feel really good about what we have. We’ll see, and that’s why we have three more games to make a decision. We have plenty of time, but we have to be patient.”

So while it’s fun to talk about, Randy Moss isn’t walking into Bank of America anytime soon unless it’s for a FOX broadcast. History also shows it’s unlikely Gettleman will place a call to get Reggie Wayne off his couch.

For now, the Panthers are rolling with who they have. Once teams chop their rosters, then you may see a new face.

You don’t have to agree with it, and it may not work out, but as someone around these parts used to say — it is what it is.

  1. I think you’ve got to give Gettleman credit for the Whittaker signing too. He isn’t setting the world on fire but Fozzy has been a really solid contributor. Remmers too. Clearly he has an eye for picking out free agent talent.
