The Panthers signed cornerback Chris Houston to a one-year deal Monday and released cornerback Jocquel Skinner. Carolina was intrigued by Skinner’s 4.3 speed, but he missed the rest of OTAs after he injured his hamstring two weeks ago.Houston, meanwhile:[vc_row_inner no_margin=”true” padding_top=”0px” padding_bottom=”0px” border=”none”][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″]Is a protypical Dave Gettleman bargain huntThe Panthers’ general manager doesn’t mind taking a chance on a cornerback with plenty of tread on his tires. In 2013, it was Drayton Florence. That worked out pretty well. Last year it was Antoine Cason. That didn’t. This offseason, the Panthers have added a pair of 30-something corners: Houston (30) and Charles Tillman (34).Sat out all of 2014 after undergoing toe surgery last springDetroit’s top cornerback from 2010-12, Houston signed a 5-year, $25 million contract in the spring of 2013. He then had his worst season as a pro before getting his toe fixed. The Lions released him last June after they became convinced he wouldn’t help them much in 2014.Has seven years of starting experience[vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_inner fade=”” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” width=”1/1″]A second-round pick of the Falcons in 2007, Houston has played in 99 games, making 91 starts. The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder spent three years in Atlanta before landing with the Lions. He’s totaled 370 tackles, 13 interceptions, 80 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in his seven seasons. His best year was 2011 when he racked up 14 pass breakups and five picks, returning two for touchdowns.Provides depth at a position that desperately needs itThe Panthers didn’t sign Houston with plans to immediately insert him into the starting lineup. Josh Norman and Charles Tillman will go into training camp as the two top corners, with Bené Benwikere slated as the No. 1 nickel. The Panthers are dangerously thin at the position, though, and Houston’s addition could ultimately knock Melvin White further down the depth chart.

Benwikere played much better as an outside CB last season (a +8.6 coverage grade from PFF vs. a -1.4 as a nickle CB).
If fully healthy, Houston is a great improvement over Melvin White, though I think Houston is a little better as a nickle CB. Maybe this move will free up Colin Jones to play some SS.

Melvin White should be allowed to play FS
What??? White is too slow for FS and can not tackle. That makes 0 sense.
