Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

James Bradberry (Sorta) Opens Up

When rookies come in and keep their mouth shut, it's usually because that's what they're supposed to do. See: Devin Funchess.

But James Bradberry has a different excuse.

"I've always been quiet," the Carolina Panthers' cornerback admitted.

The soft-spoken 23-year-old has faced cameras a couple of times since he was picked in the second round of this spring's draft, but Monday was his first experience in a podium-like situation as a pro.

To be honest, he wasn't half bad.

"I'm surprised that I'm up here talking this much," Bradberry admitted near the end of his 7-minute session. "In the past, you couldn't get like two words out of me."

So while he may not be a natural orator like tight end Greg Olsen, Bradberry shared plenty.

For example:

Q: What would you tell fans who are concerned about the Panthers' possibly starting multiple rookies at cornerback?

A: "We've all showed good signs out there going against the – I think it was the top-rated offense last year. We've been doing pretty well, so I wouldn't be concerned."

Q: Are you already tired of having to answer questions about coming from a small school?

A: "I get those questions all the time. It's not really frustrating, but I understand that's what everyone is worried about. But once I get out there, hopefully I prove them wrong."

Q: How many of your teammates even know where Samford is?

A: "I haven't had to bring up my college too much. Most guys they bring up like UGA or Oklahoma. I just sit back and listen."

Q: Could you have done anything better in this 1-on-1 matchup with Kelvin Benjamin?

A: "I know I got him out of bounds. It wasn't a complete pass because he was out of bounds. But that's all you can do against a guy like him — just go up there, put your arms in his way, at least try to knock the ball down. But his arms are so long — he's already 6-5 — so he has a huge radius for the quarterback to put the ball anywhere around him."

Q: You say you don't say much on the field. Do you ever get angry?

A: "I don't get angry often, but I've been angry before, especially when I was in college a couple times. But I haven't been angry lately. I got frustrated when Kelvin caught that ball on me because I thought I was all over it."

Q: Are the Three Amigos still inseparable?

A: "Yeah, that's what they call us. We've got to go get a birthday cake [for secondary coach Steve Wilks] after I get done with this interview ... since we're the rookies."

Q: Since your birthday was last Thursday, did anyone get you anything?

A: "Nah, but I didn't really tell anybody. I like to keep things to myself. I figured there were going to know because they already had my bio information, but no one knew. It was all good, though."

Q: You said in the spring that you wanted to buy an Audi, but Daryl Worley beat you to it. So what are you going to get?

A: "I got a [Dodge] Challenger instead. And I've got to ride with him everywhere I go now because I haven't gotten my car yet. I'm getting it shipped up here later on.

Q: Why didn't you just get the same car?

A: "I didn't want the same car as him. I already hang out with him enough."

Q: Has anyone mistake you for Josh Norman because you both wear 24?

A: "Little kids do that all the time. We have to do rookie events, and I have a little kid run up on me and then they look at me like, 'You're not Josh Norman.'"

And as Bradberry proved on and off the field Monday, he doesn't have to be.
