The Carolina Panthers listed running back Jonathan Stewart as questionable for Sunday's home opener against the 49ers. But just two weeks into the NFL's new game status report designations, it's important to remember 'probable' is no longer an option.
Stewart, who doesn't know how he tweaked his ankle, was limited but didn't miss a practice this week. On Friday, he joined a handful of Panthers who were dancing during stretching. Stewart then raced running back Fozzy Whittaker ahead of the first drill of individuals.
Under the NFL's former game status report designations, the Panthers likely would have listed Stewart as 'probable.' But last month, the league eliminated the term.
'Questionable' is now a broad category that encompasses guys that have better than a 50 percent chance to play.
That's also how safety Dean Marlowe is listed a week after he was 'doubtful' before sitting out the season opener in Denver.
If Marlowe is active against the 49ers, the Panthers would have to choose someone to be inactive who wasn't against the Broncos. That choice could come down to linebacker Jeremy Cash or cornerback Teddy Williams.
