Panthers defensive tackle Star Lotulelei won’t play in Carolina’s season opener Sunday at Jacksonville.
Lotulelei, who suffered a stress reaction in his surgically repaired right foot during the first week of training camp, is close to returning, but he’s not yet ready.
“He had a good week of work, but at the end of the day you don’t want to sit there and push a guy into something that may be worse for him, so we’re going to be smart with that one,” coach Ron Rivera said Friday.
The Panthers worked out defensive linemen Da’Quan Bowers and Kenrick Ellis this week, but when asked if that was because Lotulelei’s injury looked like it may linger, Rivera said:
“No, that was just in case more than anything else.”
Rivera also assured reporters Lotulelei’s injury hadn’t developed into a stress fracture, and there’s a good chance he’ll be back on the practice field next week.
“Coming out of Monday, he was a little sore, sorer than we would have liked, so we kind of backed off a little bit,” Rivera said. “But he’s been trending up and that’s a really good thing.”
Along with Lotulelei, offensive tackle Nate Chandler (knee) and tight end Richie Brockel (shoulder) have been ruled out for Sunday.
C Ryan Kalil (knee), CB Josh Norman (concussion) and CB Teddy Williams (groin) are listed as probable.
Kalil, who sprained his knee three weeks ago against the Dolphins, is expected to start, but Rivera said he won’t be on a full snap count. When Kalil comes out, Mike Remmers will slide inside while rookie Daryl Williams jumps in at right tackle.
Norman passed the league’s concussion protocol Thursday and he’ll start against the Jaguars.

Not to worried about it, great depth at defensive tackle.
