During his seven NFL seasons, Panthers fullback Mike Tolbert has totaled 510 carries, 171 receptions, 50 tackles, and even one kickoff return. That’s a lot of hitting. So it’s somewhat amazing the 5-9, 245 back hasn’t had a two-week stretch like the one he just went through.Tolbert was knocked out of Week 2’s win over the Lions after he took a hard shot to the chest from defensive tackle Nick Fairley. Then, late in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers, Tolbert suffered a hairline fracture in his left leg.More specifically, it’s a fracture to the tibia plateau, and it’s the most serious injury the 28-year-old has ever faced.
“I’ve become accustomed to giving out hits,” Tolbert said while standing on crutches Thursday. “Two versus 200 is not a bad record. Those two actually did something to me, but I’m not concerned about it. It’s football; people get hurt. I drew the short stick on those two plays, but I wouldn’t do it over.”Tolbert has missed just five of a possible 99 games over his seven-year career, but he’ll be out for at least the next eight games. The Panthers put him on the injured reserve/designated to return list this week, which means the earliest Tolbert can play in a game is the Week 13 matchup against the Vikings. The setback occurred after he caught a screen pass during the fourth quarter against the Steelers. When former Panther safety Mike Mitchell went low to make the tackle, Tolbert’s leg ended up planting awkwardly. He said he has no hard feelings toward Mitchell, who called Tolbert on Monday to see how he was feeling.Tolbert was the main back at the time because Jonathan Stewart left earlier in the second half with a sprained knee. While Tolbert is out, and Stewart is unlikely to play in Baltimore this Sunday, the Panthers are at least getting starter DeAngelo Williams back from a hamstring injury.”I’m a firm believer that a 50 percent DeAngelo than no DeAngelo at all. So having him at 100 percent this week is going to be a big benefit to us,” Tolbert said. “DeAngelo is more than capable of carrying the load.”Stewart “severely” sprained his knee, according to head coach Ron Rivera, so his absence may last longer than just this week. That leaves Williams, undrafted rookie Darrin Reaves, and Tauren Poole — who the Panthers signed Thursday — as the team’s only healthy backs. But while the situation looks dire right now, if the Panthers can somehow get through the next few months without Tolbert, they could possibly benefit from his fresh legs in the final stretch of the season.”Being able to come back for the last five or six games is going to be, in my opinion, a boost for the team,” Tolbert said. “Hopefully we can the job done until then.”
