Black and Blue Review- Newton will not practice this week, nor will the Panthers QB play in Thursday’s preseason finale. The first step in his recovery is waiting for the pain to subside, which should take a few days.
- Newton will be reevaluated early next week. The Panthers hope he can return to practice then, which would be in time to prepare for the season opener.

- Cowboys QB Tony Romo suffered a more serious kind of rib fracture in Week 2 of 2011, and he didn’t miss a game that season. He wore a protective vest for a few games to protect his torso.
- Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck broke a rib in 2009 and missed the next two games. After the injury, he claimed he had broken a rib previously, and that time, he didn’t miss any games.
