  1. Newton will not practice this week, nor will the Panthers QB play in Thursday’s preseason finale. The first step in his recovery is waiting for the pain to subside, which should take a few days.
  2. Newton will be reevaluated early next week. The Panthers hope he can return to practice then, which would be in time to prepare for the season opener.
  3. The injury happened when he took a knee to the back at the end of a scramble during Friday’s night’s preseason game in New England. The play starts at the 1:25 mark of this clip.
  4. The offensive line held up well on the play. Instead of throwing to open RB DeAngelo Williams, or sliding at the end of the run, Newton fell awkwardly, and 6-3, 250 pound LB Jamie Collins fell on him.
  5. According to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, there is no specific treatment for a hairline fracture of a rib. The only way to heal is time, while managing the pain.
  6. Cowboys QB Tony Romo suffered a more serious kind of rib fracture in Week 2 of 2011, and he didn’t miss a game that season. He wore a protective vest for a few games to protect his torso.
  7. Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck broke a rib in 2009 and missed the next two games. After the injury, he claimed he had broken a rib previously, and that time, he didn’t miss any games.

At this point in his career Michael Vick should be known as Mr Glass. Opposing fans look at him and he’s sidelined for a couple games.
