Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

NFC South Offseason Tracker

It's been a relatively quiet offseason in the NFC South so far.

As expected, the Panthers have bypassed big-name additions, opting instead to keep the bulk of their three-time defending NFC South-winning roster intact.

Because Atlanta and New Orleans came into the offseason with little financial flexibility, they couldn't make wholesale changes even if they wanted to.

In Tampa Bay, the biggest transformation is a new head coach.

Here's a look at the most noteworthy moves of each NFC South teams so far, plus their dead money* and cap space**.

With the Falcons having so little Salary Cap room left, with more than half of that will need to go to drafted players, leaving only around $4 million, which they need to hold on to, to be able to sign replacements for injured players during the season, are they done making moves?

Why has no team offered their tendered (around $2.55 million) RFA RT Ryan Schraeder (6’7″, 300, age 28, 3 year vet.) a contract yet? With the Falcons current remaining Salary Cap room (explained above), they can’t match an offer for Schraeder. His tender is a 2nd round tender (a 2017 pick I think), but what team wouldn’t give up a 2nd round pick for the best pass blocking RT in the NFL?

This move makes great sense to me for the Titans, getting a proven veteran RT, rather than taking a risk on LT Tunsil, and they have loads of cap room to do it.

I even think this would be a great move for the Panthers, even if they had to give up their 2016 2nd round pick (#62). Signing Schraeder would be a far better option for the Panthers than drafting OT Le’Raven Clark in the 2nd round, or OT Jason Spriggs in the 1st round, both of which aren’t ready to play as rookies. The Falcons might even be in such a salary cap fix that they might have to swap Schraeder for Remmers.
