[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″]The Carolina Panthers are making 22 moves Saturday as they chop their roster to the mandatory 53-man limit by 4 p.m.
Among the notable decisions so far: RB Brandon Wegher made the team while WR Brenton Bersin and LB Adarius Glanton did not.
- The undrafted Wegher became a darling in the fanbase when he scored three touchdowns during the preseason.
- Bersin is a bit of a surprise considering his solid summer, but the Panthers have been planning to scour waivers for wideouts after final cuts.
- Glanton was a victim of a tight race at linebacker. He appeared in 12 games, including the playoffs after as an undrafted rookie last year. The Panthers do plan to put him on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
Also, TE Brandon Williams is expected to have a spot for a third season despite missing most of camp after undergoing offseason groin surgery.
One thing that’s important to remember: If a guy is on the roster Saturday night, that doesn’t mean he’ll be there next week. The Panthers will have their eyes on other team’s cuts, most notably for receivers, cornerbacks and center.
FWIW, the team announced its final cuts at 5:58 p.m. in 2013 and 4:06 p.m. last year. So to be clear, the moves below, while confirmed by league sources, are unofficial:
Position | Player | Notes |
---|---|---|
WR | Brenton Bersin | Many talk about Jerry Richardson, but Bersin's most important relationship was with Cam Newton. The Panthers' QB trusts him. |
WR | Mike Brown | Had too many drops throughout spring and summer. |
WR | Damiere Byrd | South Carolina speedster has appeared destined for practice squad. |
TE | Scott Simonson | Could end up on practice squad. |
TE | Marcus Lucas | Made strides while switching from WR but TE too deep. |
OT | David Foucault | Panthers hope to continue project on practice squad. |
LB | Adarius Glanton | Practice squad bound, if he clears waivers. |
LB | Brian Blechen | Panthers hope to get him on practice squad. |
DT | Terry Redden | Had two strong games to open preseason but DT was a tough position to crack. |
S | Marcus Ball | Never climbed depth chart this summer. |

With Bersin gone, who is expected to make critical catches ie fourth down, third and 10 situations? Who will be trusted?
My guess is Olsen and Norwood. Norwood is still new to us, but he has excellent hands
Thanks, that makes sense.
Five receivers left on the roster assuming these cuts all stick. Keeping six WRs doesn’t seem unreasonable given how unproven much of the depth is, so a pickup off waivers appears likely.

It does seem that the panthers wide receivers that have been cut are unlikely to be picked up this weekend. Meaning, they could always be picked back up if better options do not arise. One interesting payroll isssue is that if they wait to sign a veteran wide receiver in week two or later, they don’t have to pay the veteran minimum salary.
