The Panthers finished the first half of Super Bowl 50 trailing the Broncos 13-7, but it could be a lot worse for Carolina.
A mistake-filled 30 minutes hit its first big bump when quarterback Cam Newton was strip-sacked near the goal line by outside linebacker Von Miller, who shot around right tackle Mike Remmers. When defensive end Malik Jackson dove on the ball in the end, the Broncos took a 10-0 lead.
The Panthers eventually responded with a nine-play, 73-yard touchdown drive, but miscommunication on punt coverage let Jordan Norwood spring a Super Bowl record 61 yards before defensive end Mario Addison made a touchdown-saving tackle.
The two teams later exchanged turnovers with a fumble by fullback Mike Tolbert fumbling and an one-handed interception by defensive end Kony Ealy.
The Panthers converted just three of their nine third-down attempts in the half, but the Broncos were even worse, going 1-for-8 on third down.
Denver picked up just four first downs in a half that proved its defense is as advertised, making Carolina's No. 1 scoring offense look anything but. The Broncos did a number on Newton, sacking him three times and hitting him on six other occasions.
