Panthers Complete Changes to Scouting Department

The pair of openings in the Panthers' scouting department have been filled.

Carolina announced Thursday it's hired Eric Stokes and Joel Patten.

Stokes, who was the Dolphins' assistant general manager since 2014, will scout the Southwest. That role was vacated when assistant director of college scouting Ryan Cowden became the Titans' director of player personnel earlier this month.

Patten played pro football for 13 years before he got into scouting. He's leaving his job as the 49ers' director of player personnel to take over the Midwest for John Peterson, who recently retired.

The Panthers also announced three promotions within the scouting department.

Former director of college scouting Don Gregory is now director of player personnel. Jeff Morrow has gone from national scout/senior college scout to assistant director of college scouting. And Mike Szabo has turned his college scout role into one as a national scout.

  1. Bill, I don’t know entirely how these departments are structured, but it sounds like these guys (particularly Patten) are making moves to lower positions for the Panthers. Is that true? And if so, is that because the Panthers’ scouting department is that highly esteemed?
