On a day when big headlines kept popping up in the NFL, this news quietly came across Twitter Tuesday night:
While many Carolina Panthers fans understood general manager
Dave Gettleman had no plans to try and land big names like receiver
Randall Cobb during free agency, they’ve been hopeful he’d go after bigger fish than Cobb’s Packers teammate.
Jarrett Boykin, who in high school helped build Butler into a North Carolina powerhouse, fell out of favor in Green Bay this season. The 25-year-old had just three receptions for 23 yards when he lost his No. 3 job to rookie
Davante Adams. It was a big step back for Boykin after he had a breakout season a year earlier with 49 catches, 681 yards and three touchdowns. The Packers passed on giving a tender to Boykin, who was a restricted free agent. The 6-2, 218-pounder has been effective in the slot, but he doesn’t have a lot of speed, so he’ll likely be a cheap pickup with potential wherever he lands.Again, a ‘dollar store’ option is hardly what fans envisioned when Gettleman said the Panthers “may be able to step up in class a little bit” back in January. But the sense Tuesday was they’re happy with
what they did before free agency kicked off, they’re hopeful about the upcoming draft, and they aren’t currently planning to be in the market for second-tier guys like
Cecil Shorts or
Michael Crabtree.
