Panthers Lock Up Long Snapper J.J. Jansen

The Carolina Panthers entered the offseason with 14 potential unrestricted free agents. Now it's 13.

J.J. Jansen, who's been the team's long snapper since 2009, signed a five-year extension Wednesday afternoon. The deal is reportedly worth $5.5 million with a $700,000 signing bonus.

According to Pro Football Focus, Jansen had just three "inaccurate" snaps this past season, but his last notable bad snap came in the 2010 season opener.

"I feel honored that Coach (Ron) Rivera, Mr. (Dave) Gettleman and Mr. (Jerry) Richardson trust me in the role that I play on this team," Jansen told the team's website. "I want to be here. It’s a great organization. We’ve made Charlotte our home for the past seven years and going forward long after football is done, this will be home for us."

Jansen came to Carolina via trade in April 2009 when former general manager Marty Hurney sent Green Bay a 2011 7th round pick. That selection eventually ended up with the Broncos, who used it on tight end Virgil Green.

With Jansen locked up and kicker Graham Gano signed through 2017, the Panthers have one more piece of business to take care of if they're going to keep the 'Bomb Squad' together. Punter Brad Nortman is on what is now their list of 13 potential unrestricted free agents.
