Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Why the Panthers Gained No Comp Picks for 2016 NFL Draft

Despite 'losing 'defensive end Greg Hardy to Dallas last offseason, the Carolina Panthers figured months ago they wouldn't earn any compensatory picks for the 2016 draft. That became official Friday.

The NFL awarded 13 teams 33 extra picks with none going to Carolina.

Because he was a marquee free agent, many believed Hardy would qualify the Panthers for a third-round pick. But they likely weren't even in the complicated formula that determines the additional choices.

Few around the league actually understand what goes into that formula, but this much is known: To earn anything more than a seventh-round pick, a team has to lose more or better qualifying free agents than it acquires in the previous year to be eligible.

The Panthers broke even.

Hardy and Titans offensive tackle Byron Bell counted as guys 'lost,' but Carolina 'gained' safety Kurt Coleman and cornerback Charles Tillman.

Was Coleman worth a potential third-round pick? Sure.

Was Tillman? That's debatable.

But without knowing Hardy's status with the league last spring, the Panthers couldn't just wait around and not address holes in their roster.

“Would I like to have three extra comp picks every year? Who wouldn’t?'" general manager Dave Gettleman told BBR last July. "But I don’t constantly sit there and say, ‘Oh, we can’t sign this guy because we’re not going to get a comp pick.’ I’m not going to let that stop me from building a roster."

The Panthers had two comp picks in last year's draft, using that flexibility to move up for receiver Devin Funchess and offensive tackle Daryl Williams. They then spent their extra choices on linebacker David Mayo and running back Cameron Artis-Payne in the fifth round.
