Panthers Promote Cornerback Lou Young From Practice Squad

Before cornerback Charles Tillman told the Carolina Panthers he'd risk playing on a partially torn ACL, the team was planning to promote Lou Young from the practice squad. So after Tillman suffered a full tear Sunday, the Panthers didn't need to go far for his roster replacement.

Young was added to the active roster Tuesday while Tillman was placed on injured reserve.

A three-year starter at Georgia Tech, Young signed with Denver as an undrafted free agent in 2014. He then spent time on practice squads in Baltimore and Jacksonville before the Panthers signed him to theirs last November.

Young impressed coaches in workouts this spring, but a hamstring injury cost him most of training camp. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, Young has good size and plays physical, but he's never played in an NFL regular-season game.

Robert McClain, who was out of football until he signed with Carolina last month, will take over Tillman's starting role across from Josh Norman. Cortland Finnegan will stay in the slot while Young joins Teddy Williams as a backup.
