Imagining the Panthers’ Receiving Corps With Greg Jennings

It took two weeks and two waves of free agency, but the Carolina Panthers are finally in the market for a big name. While his best days as an elite receiver are behind him, Greg Jennings is a dependable talent who would be a good value add.As BBR reported Saturday night, the nine-year veteran met with Panthers officials Saturday in Charlotte. Jennings then flew back to his home in Minneapolis with plans to visit other teams who have contacted him since his release from the Vikings. But on Sunday, he posted this interesting message on Twitter:

While the Panthers wait, let’s take a look at how the wideout roster will look if Jennings ultimately decides to come to Carolina:[accordion_item open=”true” title=”KELVIN BENJAMIN”]The Panthers were pleasantly surprised how quickly Benjamin became their top receiver as a rookie, and he’ll head into his second season as the unquestioned No. 1.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”GREG JENNINGS/JERRICHO COTCHERY”]There are two ways to look at adding Jennings to a group that already includes Jerricho Cotchery: 1.) A lineup of Benjamin, Jennings, Cotchery is better than what the Panthers had last summer; 2.) Jennings could make Cotchery expendable. They each do similar things as possession receivers who can play both outside and in the slot. Cotchery is an inch taller, but he’s a year older, and Jennings has had a more productive career, by far:
  • Jennings: 9 seasons, 552 rec., 8,083 yds, 63 TDs, 2 Pro Bowls
  • Cotchery: 11 seasons, 485 rec., 6,138 yds, 31 TDs

If he signs, Jennings could jump into the No. 2 spot, and he may stay there, pending what the Panthers do in the draft. Cotchery was a misfit in that role last year, as his ceiling has never been much higher than a No. 3.If Carolina decided to part ways with Cotchery, they could save $1.5 million toward the salary cap by making him a post-June 1 release. But that move still seems unlikely – for now.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”TED GINN/COREY BROWN “]Like Jennings and Cotchery, Ted Ginn and Corey Brown are similar. The Ohio State products are both 5-foot-11 speedsters who can help stretch the field. With Ginn sliding back into his returner role, it will be interesting to see which former Buckeye lands ahead of the other on the receiver depth chart.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”CAMP COMPETITION”]Receivers will again provide one of the most intriguing battles of the summer. Brenton BersinMike BrownStephen HillMarcus Lucas and De’Andre Presley will all get a chance, plus more names could be added during and after the draft. Hill is, of course, the guy with the most talent. There’s a chance things will click for the former Jets’ second-round pick, but he could also remain nothing more than an enigma.[/accordion]

UPDATE: The Dolphins are apparently one of the other teams looking to land Jennings.

I am all for it! Who would of ever thought that we might have too many receivers. If we sign Jennings i would say release Cotchery. With our 3rd receiver I really like Philly”s potential. I would say leave him in as the 3rd receiver he is young and we should let him to continue his development. We can bring Ginn in on special plays to mix it up. Now if we draft a receiver in an early round that will mix things up even more

I am w you…^ if WE could take his contract off June 1st cut we save 1.5million I say through a lil bit Jennings way & lock him up. The help he could offer KB & PHILLY?

When looking at their stats, I can’t help but think Cotchery’s could be similar to Jennings if it weren’t for playing for the Jets.

Nothing exciting, but still a good add to try to get in the right direction

For those who were confused before: Cotchery=Dollar Store Jennings=Target. The stats comparison is even more bleak when you take away Cotchery’s 2013 season where he had 10TDs. Jennings is a proven productive receiver, but they don’t want to throw the bank at him due to his age.

I wasnt getting hyped about it because I know how things go under Gettleman, but it looks like he be will be visiting miami, jacksonville, and green bay is thinking of resigning him. If we dont sign him id love to go receiver/left tackle in the first and second round.
