The Carolina Panthers pledged to add more speed and special teams specialists this offseason. They may have found a two-for-one deal in Teddy Williams, who signed a two-year contract Thursday night.Williams comes with a few intriguing storylines, including a college career that didn’t include football. A four-time All-American sprinter at the University of Texas at San Antonio, he was discovered and signed by the Cowboys in 2010. Not sure where to play the speedster, they put him at cornerback and receiver before he spent two seasons on the practice squad.
After the Cowboys ended their experiment with Williams, he appeared in seven games with the Colts in 2012 before bouncing to Arizona for three games a year later. The 26-year-old landed in Chicago last season, when in Week 5, he hit Panthers returner Corey Brown as he was getting ready to field a punt. Brown eventually corralled the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown. In November, the Bears released Williams, who finished the season on Jacksonville’s roster. The Panthers plan to give Williams a look in all four phases on special teams. He’ll also get a shot to earn reps on defense, where he’s played just one snap during his career. He hasn’t returned a punt or kickoff, but he did have a 51-yard reception with the Cardinals. The signing may not be exciting for Panthers fans who have been hoping for bigger things since the Tuesday’s start of free agency, but it is at least a little bit interesting.-
