Handful of Starters Sit Out Panthers First Super Bowl Practice

A number of guys stayed inside Wednesday as the Carolina Panthers practiced for the first time since advancing to the Super Bowl.

Running back Jonathan Stewart (ankle), fullback Mike Tolbert (knee), center Ryan Kalil (knee) and defensive end Charles Johnson (TBA) all missed what was mostly a day involving game plan installation. But with a week and a half until the Panthers and Broncos kick off, none of the absences are all that concerning yet.

What's more important is who was at practice.

TDLinebacker Thomas Davis, who broke his right arm in the NFC Championship, was there for stretching and installation before he went back inside. Because he had a sweatshirt over his arm, it was tough to tell what protection he had on it, but Davis is expected to be ready to play in a week and a half.

Safety Roman Harper, who missed the second half against the Cardinals after he was poked in the eye, was in full pads and went through drills. So did defensive end Jared Allen, who's working his way back on a broken foot.

Running back Fozzy Whittaker, who played Sunday on a sore ankle, was just a spectator. That left rookies Cameron Artis-Payne and Brandon Wegher as the only running backs in pads.
