They’ve built their front to throw edge rushers at opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks for four quarters. After Carolina surprisingly deactivated defensive end Greg Hardy shortly before Sunday’s home opener with the Lions, it was Mario Addison’s opportunity to prove the system is just that — one that doesn’t hinge on just a single player.“When I get my chance, I’m going to go all out. When opportunity calls, I need that opportunity to show coach (Ron Rivera) that I can do it,” Addison said after the Panthers improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2008. “I’ve got a role on this team. We all have a role on the team. Everybody’s role is important.”Addison had a career day, piling up 2.5-sacks against a Lions line that gave up the second-fewest sacks (23) in the NFL last year. Addison had only 3.5 sacks during his first three seasons, and he matched his total from 2013 in just 60 minutes on Sunday.“It’s not a surprise,” defensive tackle Kawann Short said. “Last year when we played Miami and Charles (Johnson) was out, Mario came in and did the same thing. We know what he’s capable of, and just guys outside, in this locker room, we know what Mario can and what he can’t do and how fast he is off the edge.”As an undrafted rookie out of Troy, Addison landed in Chicago, then skipped around to Indianapolis and Washington before he landed with Carolina late in 2012. In his first three stops, he made just nine tackles in 15 appearances. The defensive front’s first half against the Lions was a fitting parallel with Addison’s career journey.Detroit gained nearly 200 yards of total offense in the first two quarters. Receivers Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate each had four receptions, while the Panthers failed to get to quarterback Matthew Stafford. Even though they broke down the pocket a handful of times, they didn’t register a sack or QB hurry. After Detroit scored on its first possession of the third quarter, the Panthers’ pressure kept bubbling up. In the fourth quarter, it boiled over. The waves of fresh bodies on the line wore down the Lions, whose fourth-quarter included: no points, 54 yards, one Stafford interception, and four combined sacks by Addison and defensive tackle Dwan Edwards. And while Addison had a breakout game, the most-important take-away is he didn’t do it alone.“It’s not about one person,” linebacker Thomas Davis said. “It’s not about Luke Kuechly. It’s not about Charles Johnson. It’s not about Thomas Davis. It’s about our defense. As long as we keep that mentality and we keep that attitude, we will be ok.”[vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html]

I’m seeing a trend in the team’s mentality. We are a good team and will only be getting better!
