Like every NFL team, the Carolina Panthers kick the tires on free agents throughout the season. The workouts rarely include names most fans would recognize, but Wednesday’s did.
According to a league source, the Panthers brought in cornerback Dee Milliner and safety Earl Wolff. The tryouts were first reported by ESPN’s Adam Caplan.
Milliner, who the Jets took with the 9th overall pick of the 2013 draft, has either been injured or played poorly in his brief career. The Alabama product appeared in only 21 games before the Jets cut bait in September.
Milliner, 25, was waived/injured during final cuts. He spent the first three weeks of the season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury and was then released.
He’s played in just eight games since the start of 2014, so Milliner’s name is bigger than his game. But if the Panthers believe he’s healthy, he could be an interesting addition depth-wise.
Wolff isn’t as intriguing, but safety is another area where it doesn’t hurt the Panthers to at least see what’s out there.
An Eagles’ fifth-round pick in 2013, Wolff played 18 games with seven starts in two seasons with Philadelphia. The Jaguars gave him a shot in the summer of 2015, but he was released a week into the season.
