As always, it’s tough to take much out of what the lines do during these non-padded practices, so most observations are about skill position players.
QB Cam Newton: Despite big, new contract, as excited as usual to be practicing. Wasn’t as locked-in as last Thursday, but his arm and legs continue to look good. Connected with WRs Ted Ginn and Devin Funchess for touchdowns during two-minute drills, but Newton was also intercepted twice.RB Jordan Todman: Holding onto his spot as third in line behind Jonathan Stewart and Fozzy Whittaker but ahead of fifth-round pick Cameron Artis-Payne. Made a nice juke move to get past LB Luke Kuechly during 11-on-11s.FB Lee Ward: Practicing this week after he finished up the quarter at Stanford. The 5-foot-11, 250-pound blocking back has tree trunks for legs.WR Kelvin Benjamin: Still sitting out with a strained hamstring. Played soft toss with Newton, QB Derek Anderson and TE Greg Olsen during a special teams install period.WR Devin Funchess: Already getting plenty of work with the starters. Had a drop early in 9-on-9s and tried to one-hand a deep ball after he had a step on S Tre Boston. Later made a handful of catches, including a bullet from Newton in the back of the end zone during a two-minute drill.WR Brenton Bersin: When he couldn’t reel in a Newton pass that was a bit behind him, the tipped ball was snagged for an interception by diving S Tre Boston. But Bersin also had a number of catches on the day.WR Ted Ginn: As expected, No. 1 in line during punt returns. Beat CB Colin Jones for a score in the corner of the end zone during a two-minute drill.WR Stephen Hill: Took a step back after last Thursday’s impressive practice. Had a bad drop during individual drills and didn’t get in much with the first group (Jerricho Cotchery, Corey Brown, Funchess, Ginn and Bersin).WR Jarrett Boykin: Hasn’t made many notable plays in either of the OTAs the media has been able to watch.WR De’Andre Presley: After slipping past CB Josh Norman, dropped a slightly overthrown pass from Newton in the back of the end zone.WR Damiere Byrd: Undrafted free agent is starting to get a few more snaps during team periods. He beat S Dean Marlowe to haul in a deep pass from Anderson on the final play of practice.TE Ed Dickson: Made one of the best catches of the day, leaping high in the middle of the field to bring down an Anderson pass.RT Daryl Williams: Played with both the second- and third- team as the Panthers try to accelerate the rookie’s development.OL Nate Chandler: Remains limited. Again went through a few individual drills before sitting out the team periods.DE Charles Johnson: Made the play of the day — a one-handed interception of Newton. He did that from the right side, where spent nearly the entire practice. Johnson played all but one (2011) of his previous eight seasons on the left side.DE Frank Alexander: Appeared to be outside the main rotation of Johnson, Mario Addison, Kony Ealy and Wes Horton.DT Kawann Short: Something to watch going forward — he lined up a handful of times at left end.LB David Mayo: Spent the day as the second-team MLB, but has been mostly quiet through two weeks.LB Adarius Glanton: Made an interception late in practice.LB Thomas Davis: Listening to him and Johnson yap with the offense is high-quality entertainment.LB Jason Trusnik: Appeared to play a few snaps in the middle of the defensive line.CB Bené Benwikere: Still out with a tight hamstring, but did some light jogging during a couple individual drills.CB Garry Peters: Many were excited to see the Clemson product at OTAs, but a sore hamstring continues to keep the undrafted rookie out.CB Jocquel Skinner: Was at practice after signing Tuesday. Wasn’t on the field Thursday.CB Josh Norman: Jumped route, but couldn’t grab diving attempt at an interception on the first play of two-minute drills. On a day when the defense did a lot of talking, Norman was surprisingly quiet. “Until I’m aggravated by something, that’s when I get going,” he said afterward.CB Charles Tillman: Spent a ton of time talking to the younger CBs. Broke up pass intended for Funchess on the first play of 9-on-9s, but the rookie later slipped past him in the end zone during a two-minute drill.CB Carrington Byndom: Saw a bunch of snaps with the second team. Dropped what should have been an interception on an overthrow from Anderson to Boykin, but also had a pass breakup on a deep ball to Ginn.S Kurt Coleman: Shared some first-team snaps with starting SS Roman Harper.S Dean Marlowe: Nearly picked off an Anderson pass intended for TE Brandon Williams. Beaten on the final play of practice by Anderson and Byrd.
