HEALTH WATCH
- WR Philly Brown, who left Saturday's practice early after feeling sick, returned to practice.
- G Chris Scott sat out with an undisclosed injury.
- WR Brenton Bersin (ribs), TE Ed Dickson (groin) and S Dean Marlowe (hamstring) remained out. Marlowe hasn't practiced since last Monday.
TOP PLAY
With the second-team offense facing a fourth-and-5 on its final play of the 2-minute drill, QB Derek Anderson lobbed a ball that went over the head of CB Bené Benwikere and into the hands of WR Damiere Byrd. As the offense celebrated, Benwikere's blow up became the story of the day.
What shouldn't be overshadowed is that is was another play made by Byrd, who continues to make a strong argument for a roster spot.
"I think that I've done everything that I can to vie for my spot on this team," he said afterward. "I just have to keep going out there and making plays. Regardless of what happens, I think that I've put out my best resume that I can put out and I'll continue to do so."
PLAYER NOTES
- QB Cam Newton, who had hoped to get through camp without throwing an interception to LBs Luke Kuechly or Thomas Davis, nearly did. On the third-to-last practice, Newton was picked by Kuechly on the first play of 7-on-7 drills. As Kuechly ran the other way, Davis screamed "got him!"
Said Rivera after practice: "You take two good athletes and they're competing against each other, somebody is going to make a play. It was inevitable, I think, that Luke was going to get one."
- WR Devin Funchess helped Newton earn a measure of revenge on the next play by beating CB Daryl Worley for a touchdown:

- WR Ted Ginn Jr. did the same on the first play of team drills when he zipped past CB James Bradberry to haul in a Newton bomb.
- TE Scott Simonson held onto an Anderson pass in the middle of the field despite taking a shot from S Marcus Ball.
- LB David Mayo had a good day. At one point, defensive coordinator Sean McDermott ran out into the middle of the field to praise Mayo.
- CB Lou Young dropped what should have been an interception of QB Joe Webb.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
A few thoughts:
Newton is annoying. At least, that's what I'd think if I was on defense during training camp. It's not so much his celebrations when he makes plays; it's his constant yelling whenever the 2nd- and 3rd-team offense does as well. So as crazy as it was, it was understandable when things boiled over with CB Josh Norman last year.
But there's a method to Newton's madness.
Sure, it's nice that he's supporting his offensive teammates, but he also believes there's a benefit to getting under the defense's skin.
When Newton's quiet, so is pretty much everyone else. Practices lose a bit of their energy. But when he's yapping, players on both sides of the ball have something to gain and lose. So whether it's Funchess and Davis with the ones or Byrd and Benwikere with the backups, guys can't help but care about every rep.
Sunday's rant by Benwikere wasn't a direct result of all the yapping, but it's hard not to believe it wasn't an emotional byproduct. Fortunately, no one threw any punches and on Monday, Newton will likely be barking again.
