Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Ron Rivera Gives Stephen Curry a Free Agency Update

Ron Rivera has been racking up air miles lately.Earlier this month, the Carolina Panthers coach squeezed in some draft prep while he was out in Los Angeles to watch his daughter, Courtney, a senior pitcher on UCLA’s softball team. After flying back to Charlotte last Sunday, Rivera returned to the West Coast this weekend. He watched Friday’s football practice at Cal before speaking at a career development dinner at his alma mater.Rivera will be back at Bank of America Stadium on Monday, and there’s reason to believe he and the Panthers will be more active in the coming days than they were after free agency kicked off last week. Not only does general manager Dave Gettleman have a two-year history of making moves in the upcoming waves, but Rivera dropped an interesting line at the end of this video:

After watching the Warriors beat the Knicks in Oakland Saturday night, Rivera gave Stephen Curry, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, a custom-made Panthers jersey. Rivera then told the NBA star, “We’re flying back because we’ve got some free agents coming in.” The Panthers were happy with what they accomplished before free agency began, and they’re not interested in higher-priced options still available, but Rivera’s comment should help assure nervous fans the team plans to add some new acquisitions.Curry’s jersey collection, meanwhile, continues to grow. When the Charlotte native and Panthers fan flew to Seattle for January’s Divisional playoff, he watched the game in a Cam Newton jersey while his wife Ayesha was in one Curry wore during a photoshoot with Newton in 2012.
