Jonathan Stewart made a surprise appearance during the Panthers’ Friday walk-through. The running back, who sprained his knee against the Steelers, had his helmet and shoulder pads on, but he appeared very limited.Stewart and linebacker Thomas Davis are listed as questionable for Sunday. But Davis, who returned to practice on Thursday, has a much better chance to face the Ravens.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”Ron Rivera, Friday Sept. 26″]On Davis (questionable with hip and hamstring injuries) and Stewart (questionable with knee sprain):
“Thomas looked pretty good today. Jonathan didn’t look as good as we hoped.”
On Philly Brown’s role as a receiver after his six-catch performance against the Steelers:
“He’s going to continue to be blended in. He did a nice job, and he deserves to continue to play. It’s good to have the veteran guys we have back on the field. At the same time, we also have to understand that there is an explosiveness to Philly’s ability.”
On two-tight end sets and Ed Dickson, who has one target and no receptions this season:
“Yeah, I’d like to see us use Ed a little bit more. Has Ed worked himself into position where we should? Yes, he has … Sometimes you’ve just got to fight that urge … fight those urges that you want to go back to what you’re comfortable with, or come back to what’s worked, or say ‘Oh, we didn’t have success with this.’ You have to fight that.”
On improving from last week’s defensive issues against the Steelers:
“Yeah, it was shocking. It was disappointing. I’m pissed off about it. I was pissed off about it for three days. But there’s nothing you can do about it, it’s over now. The thing we’ve got to do is correct it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
On facing former Panther WR Steve Smith:
“I kind of feel way too much is being made of this whole thing. We know who he is; you guys have known him for a long time, he’s a tremendous player, and he has a great chance to be the first Carolina Panther in the Hall of Fame. So let’s understand that and move forward.”
On if he’s told his defensive backs to control their emotions on Sunday vs. Smith:
“I’m not going to get into it with a player and take his edge away. ‘All right, stay calm, no matter what, stay calm’ … I want these guys to play with some excitement and energy. To me it’s crazy to take that away, and now, instead of focusing on playing, they’re worried about their behavior.”
On his relationship with Smith:
“I’ll always be grateful for Steve because Steve’s one of the guys that helped me get going to where I am today.”
