None of what happened around DeAngelo Williams on Thursday was a coincidence. The Panthers running back didn’t just happen to talk to the media in Charlotte for the first time since last season. He didn’t just happen to have a pair of goggles in his locker. And he didn’t just happen to put them on when reporters started asking questions and cameras began filming. The goggles, of course, were a reminder of Steve Smith’s memorable statement back in March. On the day the Panthers cut the best player in their history, he was asked what would happen if he ever faced his former team.“Put your goggles on because there’s going to be blood and guts everywhere,” Smith replied. So is Williams expecting blood and guts Sunday when the Panthers play Smith and the Ravens in Baltimore?”I wouldn’t say that, man. It’s a football game. That sounds more like surgery, when you say blood and guts,” Williams said. “I’m just an Eric Dickerson fan; that’s why I have the goggles on.”Right.Williams and Smith were teammates for eight years. They each have big personalities. Oftentimes, guys with big personalities clash.Smith’s aggressive personality is well known. Williams is more passive-aggressive, as evidenced Thursday. And while he claimed he didn’t have a message for Smith, Williams did acknowledge the comments made by the fiery wideout in Week 1.“I know he’s going to be super excited when we get there. He kind of left us a message the first game of the season, so we’re looking forward to that,” Williams said. Most of the banter back and forth this week has been playful, but make no mistake, there are a handful of guys in the Panthers’ locker room who aren’t heading into Sunday with fuzzy feelings. Williams, who was not close with Smith, is an example. This game isn’t just a chance for Smith to prove something. A few of the Panthers feel they have something to prove to their former teammate, as well.”I spent eight years with Steve and I know how fiery he is and I know how good the Ravens are,” Williams said. “We’ll all know the answer to the end of that message come Sunday.”
