Thursday’s Minicamp Notes: The Limiteds, Benjamin’s ‘Vengeance,’ McDermott’s Message

--Thursday was the final day of boredom for the Panthers who could only watch team drills during offseason workouts.

Linebacker Luke Kuechly, receivers Kelvin Benjamin, Stephen Hill and Philly Brown, tight end Scott Simonson, defensive ends Arthur Miley and Mario Addison, and cornerback Bené Benwikere were all limited.

Coach Ron Rivera confirmed that everyone's still on schedule for a full return at training camp, even if some may not be as full-go at the start as others.

--Kuechly was allowed to go in for one play during a red-zone drill on Wednesday, and on Thursday, it was Benjamin's turn. He was in with the first-team offense for one snap -- a running play.

Like most of the guys on the list above, Benjamin could have done more the past few weeks, but the Panthers' plan has focused on getting everyone ready for training camp.

"Benji is coming back with a vengeance, and I mean it," quarterback Cam Newton said.

--WR Brenton Bersin was again the only player not on the field. He missed the final two practices after rolling his ankle in the first. WR Devin Funchess, who was sick Tuesday, was the only other absentee during the mandatory minicamp.

--When linebacker Shaq Thompson's on the field, it's hard to tell if the Panthers are in their 4-3 defense or in a nickel package. And that's exactly the point. Thompson's versatility allows him to line up in the slot across from guys like receiver Devin Funchess and to go through individual drills with the cornerbacks like he did on Thursday.

--Second-round corner James Bradberry made his best play of minicamp, diving to knock away a Newton pass to receiver Kevin Norwood near the sideline.

--Third-round corner Daryl Worley was caught napping on a Funchess out route. Assistant defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller reminded Worley that his responsibility on the play was anything to the outside.

--Running back Brandon Wegher got a loud cheer from the offense when he snagged a screen pass with one hand before sprinting down the sideline.

--Receiver Keyarris Garrett, who was quiet throughout OTAs and minicamp, made a good catch in traffic on a drag route. Garrett and linebacker Jeremy Cash, another priority undrafted free agent, need big training camps to have any shot at the final 53-man roster.

--After Rivera released the team from their final huddle, defensive coordinator Sean McDermott gathered his group for a chat. It's likely his message included a reminder that this upcoming five-week summer vacation would be best spent staying out of any trouble.
