What They’re Saying: Post-Combine Mock Drafts

BREAKING: The Panthers need help at tackle.Since anyone who pays attention to the NFL knows about Carolina’s biggest need, the next two months will be filled with most mock drafts plugging in a variety of possible tackles at No. 25. In this sampling of 10 mocks done after last week’s combine, only one predicts a different position for the Panthers.[accordion_item title=”Daniel Jeremiah” open=”true”]

OT T.J. Clemmings, Pittsburgh

“He’s very raw, having only played offensive line the past two seasons, but he is a huge, powerful run-blocker who has enough mobility to develop into a good starter at right tackle in the NFL.”  — ESPN.com (Insider)

“Nine weeks from the draft, offensive line here feels like a lock.” — The Big Lead[accordion_item title=”Eric Edholm” open=”true”]

OT Ereck Flowers, Miami

“The massive Flowers has some technique issues he needs to clean up to maximize his power and become a good pass blocker. But he’s a fiery competitor can bring a dose of nastiness back to the Panthers up front and improve upon failed starter Byron Bell.” — Yahoo Sports[accordion_item title=”Don Banks” open=”true”]

“Job 1 in Carolina is to make sure Cam Newton absorbs less punishment next season, and that means the Panthers’ offensive line needs fortifying.” — SI.com[accordion_item title=”Pat Kirwan” open=”true”]

OT Cameron Erving, Florida State

“Many believe TJ Clemmings is a better prospect but the Senior Bowl practices told me something different. Erving has played defense, left tackle and center. He’s an athlete and the Panthers need help up front.” — CBSSports.com[accordion_item title=”Peter Schrager” open=”true”]

OT Cameron Erving, Florida State

“The offensive lineman class in this year’s draft is solid, but not particularly top-heavy in the first round. This could be a sweet spot for Carolina, as a top-five tackle could slip.” — FOXSports.com[accordion_item title=”Rob Rang” open=”true”]

OT D.J. Humphries, Florida

“Humphries is a bit raw but is one of the few tackles in this class athletic enough to remain on the left side in the NFL.” — CBSSports.com[accordion_item title=”Charles Davis” open=”true”]CB Jalen Collins, LSU

“Collins did not start a lot of games in college, but his length and athleticism create excellent potential.” — NFL.com

These “draft experts” just see that the Panthers need OT help, dig no further, and plug in any OT, but their top need is at LT. This draft only has 2 or 3 good LT’s, and the top 2 (Fisher and Humphries) will be gone before the Panthers 2nd round pick, so they have to draft one of these 2 IT’s in the 1st round.

I don’t understand why D J Humphries is rated so highly. Yes, he has the athleticism to play LT but he was not very productive at Florida. He is probably a round 2 or 3, he may just be getting the benefit in what is a poor LT class. I would say we take a good WR in 1 and then draft Fisher or Sambraillo in the 2nd and then pray one of them comes through. Unless, they have the patience to draft T J Clemmings and develop him while Newton gets murdered back there 🙂

It’s hard to fill the LT position in the draft,, this is the only FA pick up I’ve hoped for. Ya never know what your gonna get in drafting a Olineman but you can be pretty sure what you’re getting in FA.
If we could fill this position in FA it makes the draft a whole lot easier IMO…
