It hit me shortly after I woke up Thursday morning: The Panthers will be on the field for their first training camp practice in just one week.
So like most of us do before we roll out of bed, I grabbed my cellphone. Forget those email, text and Twitter notifications. I wanted to see how the long-term forecast in Spartanburg was shaping up.
Gulp.
The Weather Channel app showed a long string of mid-90s, lots of sun and plenty of humidity.
OK, but we should know by now that weather apps aren't all that dependable. So I asked WCNC's fantastic meteorologist Brad Panovich if he could whip up an early camp forecast.
Two things about that:
1.) Ask Brad and you shall receive.
2.) Be careful what you wish for.
That 10-day forecast only runs through the Panthers' first four practices, but we're clearly not catching a break this year. It won't be like two summers ago when the average temperature at camp was a record-low 73.5 degrees. Even last year wasn't too bad, with an average that finished below 80.
So with attendance records set to be shattered, there's a decent chance this year's average will rise like the interest that follows a team coming off a Super Bowl run.
