1. Reading between the lines, the Carolina Panthers are planning to move on from running back DeAngelo Williams. But general manager Dave Gettleman didn’t make the same mistake he made at last year’s combine when he clumsily talked about receiver Steve Smith.
Gettleman on Williams’ limited 2014 season: “It’s hard, especially when you’re 32. A 32-year-old running back in the NFL. It was extremely difficult, but he finished the season like a pros-pro and like a man, and I really respect DeAngelo for the way he finished it. We had our conversation, and we’ll probably continue, but that’s where we’ll leave it.”
2. The Panthers are still intent on following the NFL’s lead in everything related to defensive end Greg Hardy. Gettleman did reveal he hasn’t talked to Hardy since he was placed on the Commissioners’ Exempt List in September, and he’s had “very minimal” conversation with Hardy’s agent Drew Rosenhaus. Hardy’s teammates have recently gone to bat for him to get another chance in Carolina, but the Panthers are still planning to move on.3. The Panthers will add a receiver or two this offseason, and they aren’t stressing much over how they’re going to find that help. There are a few upcoming free agents they’re interested in, and the draft will provide all sorts of possibilities.
Gettleman on the draft’s wideouts: “The wide receiver group, again, it’s pretty darn deep. All shapes and sizes, whatever you’re looking for, you should be able to find, and you’re going to get value.”
4. The Panthers are looking for a left tackle, but that’s a much tougher hunt than receiver. Gettleman wouldn’t talk much about Byron Bell’s status, but the upcoming free agent is not expected to return. The draft is deep at tackle, but it’s still too early to tell how many prospects Gettleman sees as guys who could play on the left side. As far as free agency goes, the Panthers will be looking for the best bargain.
Gettleman on potential free agent tackle targets: “There’s going to be one or two that are high-dollar guys, and I told you guys back at the presser, we’re not shopping at Tiffany’s yet.”
