Panthers 6-Pack: Stewart/Peterson, Diggs, Fozzy/Gaffney, Marlowe & TE TDs

1.) Injured Backs

Unlike most NFL coaches, Ron Rivera doesn’t always treat injury information like it’s a matter of national security.

For example, Rivera on Monday admitted running back Jonathan Stewart “could miss a week or two” after he strained his hamstring Sunday against the 49ers. Technically, there’s a chance Stewart may return to face the Vikings this week. He could also be out longer than two weeks. The point is we’re somewhat spoiled in Carolina by a coach who isn’t afraid to call a spade a spade.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the Vikings aren’t yet ruling out Adrian Peterson for their trip to Charlotte. The All-World running back suffered a torn meniscus in the third quarter of Sunday night’s win over the Packers. Technically, Peterson could play through it. What’s much more likely is the 2-0 Vikings will play it safe with the former NFL MVP.

“He’s a stud. I think he’s one of the best guys I’ve ever seen play at that spot,” Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly said. “We’ve got to prepare for him to be there and we’ve got to prepare for him not to be there.”

Which is exactly what Vikings coach Mike Zimmer would want.

If — or assuming — Peterson doesn’t play, the Panthers will instead face the tandem of Matt Asiata and Jerick McKinnon.

Even with Peterson, the Vikings have struggled to run so far this season. Through Sunday’s games, they were dead last in the league at 47.5 yards per game.

Fozzy literally just had his first and ONLY career game after 4+ years as a pro player, buried on multiple depth charts. Is he better in hind sight than Gaffney? Sure given the latter’s injury history, but only marginally so in the big picture. I mean, he just totaled 22.5% of his CAREER yards yesterday, in his fifth season. It’s probably a little bit of hyperbole to intimate he’s a stud back at this point in light of realistic evaluation of the evidence.

Bottom line, if the Panthers have to hang their running game hats on Whittaker or Gaffney for a full competitive season, the historical data suggests the team is in big trouble long-term. I much prefer him as a pass game weapon and special teams guy; give me CAP as the feature back going forward in 28’s absence.

He is certainly a better open field runner than Stewart. Reminded me of Sproles on Sunday. Having him outside on the option toss was improved as he can turn the corner. I hope this wasn’t a fluke but a new beginning for Fozzy. Payne was inactive for a reason.
