Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton missed his first full practice since he injured his back in a car accident 22 months ago.
Newton, who suffered his first documented concussion in Sunday's loss to the Falcons, wasn't at the Bank of America Stadium practice fields Wednesday as the Panthers started to get ready for Week Five's game with the Bucs.
If Newton isn't out of the NFL's concussion protocol in time, backup Derek Anderson will start on Monday night.
Because of the extra day, the Panthers didn't have to turn in a Wednesday injury report, but here are other notes from the portion of practice open to the media:
Didn't Practice:
- LT Michael Oher (concussion): Like Newton, not on the field.
- RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring): Working on the side for the first time since he was injured.
- LB Thomas Davis (hamstring): According to coach Ron Rivera, Davis on Monday said, "I'll be fine."
- WR Devin Funchess (toe)
- DE Charles Johnson (quad)
- CB James Bradberry (toe): Stayed inside.
- OT Mike Remmers (undisclosed)
- DT Vernon Butler (ankle): His right foot is still in a boot.
- DE Kony Ealy (undisclosed): Not on the field, but was in the locker room afterward.
- LB A.J. Klein: May be back with his family after his father, Len, passed away last week.
Didn't Practice, Possible Vet Days
- WR Ted Ginn Jr.
- FB Mike Tolbert
- C Ryan Kalil
- TE Greg Olsen
- DT Star Lotulelei
Miscellaneous
- OL Chris Scott: Back from his suspension, now the Panthers have a one-week exemption before they have to decide if they should put him on the active roster.
- DE Larry Webster: Added back to the practice squad.
- S Dean Marlowe: On injured reserve with a hamstring injury, but worked on the side. If the Panthers stay remarkably healthy over the next couple months, they have the option to bring him back.
