Panthers’ Pre-Draft Activities: What They May or Not Mean

Over the past couple months, we’ve been compiling a list of Panthers’ pre-draft activities. While many have enjoyed it for predicting possibilities, it’s important to remember how unofficial and incomplete the exercise has been.Consider all this:

  • General manager Dave Gettleman revealed Tuesday that he used all 30 of his in-house visits this year. 22 visits are listed.
  • The list is made up of reported activities, which always leaves room for inaccuracy. Agents use reporters for all sorts of stuff and vice versa. Plus, sometimes the word “visit” is used for what may have instead been a private workout.
  • Obviously, much doesn’t even get reported. Not only visits, but it’s unclear how many more workouts the Panthers held or which other pro days they attended.
  • According to this list of visits and workouts from last year, of the 24 guys listed under Carolina, just two wound up here: Kony Ealy and Philly Brown. And of these 17 in 2013, none became Panthers.
  • Teams use visits for many reasons. Former Bears Head of Scouting Greg Gabriel shared a great example from 2003 here.
  • All of this, which is one of the reasons we never listed meetings with players from the Senior Bowl and combine: “There’s no rhyme or reason to the draft — nobody knows anything. Teams have been scouting these players for years, see them at the Senior Bowl and other postseason events, talk to them at the Combine, talk to their agent, their friends, their private QB coach, their high school coach and anyone else relevant.”

Now, all of that doesn’t mean it was completely useless to log these 65 names. D.J. Humphries and Shaq Thompson are on here, and there’s a good shot one of them will be the 25th pick. But more than anything else, the list will be a good resource. Ahead of subsequent drafts, we’ll be able to look back to see how many of this year’s new Panthers had been somewhat connected to Carolina.

  1. Bill, do you think the loss of RB Gaffney will be felt this year, and will it affect their approach to the draft?

If Collins goes undrafted and is later cleared of wrongdoing, would the Panthers be in better position than other teams to sign him as a street free agent?
