Former Panthers’ General Manager Marty Hurney Continues to Slip Back into the Public Eye

A fter he was fired in October 2012, former Panthers general manager Marty Hurney stayed out of the public eye. He started re-emerging this spring as a guest analyst on ESPN’s “NFL Insiders,” and he’s about to start another new chapter as a sports talk radio host.”Hurney and Gardner” debuts Monday on ESPN 730 in Charlotte. Hurney’s partner, Al Gardner, used to host mornings on WBT-AM. The new show will air weekdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Hurney told Mark Washburn he hopes to bring an “analytical perspective” from his 10-plus years as Carolina’s GM.To some, Hurney talking for two hours a day may seem like a stretch, but his entry back into the media makes a lot of sense. Before he started working for teams, Hurney used to cover them. He was the Redskins beat writer for the Washington Times, and his path to jobs inside organizations started when he developed strong relationships with general manager Bobby Beathard, head coach Joe Gibbs and owner Jack Kent Cooke.Despite helping build the Panthers into NFC Champions in just two seasons, Hurney’s largely remembered more for his mistakes. Being an NFL GM is an impossible job, and one that rarely ends well.“I never had any problems with criticism — lord knows, a lot of it was justified,” Hurney told Washburn.[gap size=”2.813em”]
