Sunday Six-Pack, ft. Kelvin's Fire and a Final Poll About Agent 89

[accordion_item title=”WR KELVIN BENJAMIN”]

Rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin appears to be a big kid off the field. But on it, he has a somewhat surprising amount of fire.[gap size=”20px”]
It’s nowhere close to Steve Smith levels, but the Panthers’ coaching staff has been pleasantly surprised by Benjamin’s willingness to get physical with defensive backs.[gap size=”18px”]

In the second week of the preseason, Benjamin was too physical. He was called for unnecessary roughness when, after an incompletion, he tossed the ball at Kansas City’s Chris Owens, and then gave the cornerback a shove to his face mask.So while Benjamin has taken over Smith’s spot as the Panthers’ No. 1 receiver, he also wants to show a little bit of attitude as well.”(Smith’s) going to let the defense know from the first jump that it’s going to be a long day with him. That’s something I want to take from him and keep going,” Benjamin said.[accordion_item title=”DE MARIO ADDISON”]Considering his big-money contract and the absence of Greg Hardy, the pressure is rising on Charles Johnson to get, well, more pressure.Through three games, the 8th-year defensive end has three tackles and no sacks. But there’s two things to consider before assuming Johnson’s had an unproductive start:1.) No Hardy means defenses can focus their attention on Johnson.2.) That attention means Mario Addison has faced less resistance.Addison skyrocketed to third in the NFL with 3.5 sacks over the last two games, a total that matched his career numbers over his previous 39 games. The 27-year-old deserves plenty of credit for this recent breakout performances, but so does the entire defensive line — including Johnson.”The ends put an edge on the quarterback, and the inside gets push. That way, the quarterback can’t get out. You never know who’s going to get the sack,” Addison said. “If one man isn’t doing his job, and the quarterback can get out, it doesn’t benefit anybody. So production’s not all about sacks, it’s about pressure on the quarterback.”[accordion_item title=”RB TAUREN POOLE”]The Panthers couldn’t go into Sunday with just two running backs and tight end/fullback Richie Brockel. So while Tauren Poole may not get on the field, he’ll be available in case of an emergency.Poole, who was signed to the practice squad on Thursday, was promoted to the active roster on Saturday. He’s never played in a regular-season game, but after spending time in Carolina the last two seasons, he’s familiar enough with the offense if the Panthers are in a pinch.DeAngelo Williams, who missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, will start against the Ravens. With No. 2 back Jonathan Stewart unlikely to play with a sprained knee, undrafted rookie Darrin Reaves should see his first NFL carries.[accordion_item title=”OT GARRY WILLIAMS”]Offensive tackle Garry Williams had a solid training camp, and he played 26 snaps in Week 1 against the Bucs, but his injury history made Saturday’s news feel like it was just a matter of time.Williams was put on injured reserve with a back injury, so for the third time in the last four years, his season is over before October. In 2011, Williams fractured his ankle in the preseason finale. Last year, he tore his ACL and MCL in the season opener against Seattle.Despite his rough luck with injuries, the Panthers were hopeful Williams could be a key backup. Now Canadian David Foucault, who’s still very raw, is the only tackle behind starters Byron Bell and Nate Chandler.[accordion_item title=”DT CASEY WALKER”]For the third time in as many weeks, the Panthers have had a player poached from their practice squad.Defensive tackle Casey Walker was picked up Saturday by the Patriots, who by rule, had to add him to their 53-man roster.Walker spent some time on the Carolina’s practice squad last season, and he was back on there this year after a solid training camp and preseason. In Week 2, the Seahawks signed offensive tackle Andrew McDonald from the Panthers’ practice squad, and receiver Tavarres King was taken away by the Jaguars last week.[accordion_item title=”WR STEVE SMITH”][/accordion]
