We’ve spent a good amount of time lately looking into what’s gone wrong this season. So here’s something a bit more positive.Three Panthers have solid claims to make the Pro Bowl. One is a virtual lock, another is a longshot, and the third is putting up numbers few can ignore. They all need your vote, which you’d probably give them anyway since they’re on your team, but here are some statistical arguments for the trio.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”Linebacker Luke Kuechly”]141005 Panthers v Bears_0527Kuechly has led the NFL in tackles for most of the season, and he’s currently 1st in voting among inside linebackers. So even non-Panthers fans understand how good he is, and opposing coaches rave weekly about the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. The 23-year-old hasn’t had his best season, but he has gotten better in coverage, something he wanted to improve on this year. Kuechly has six passes defensed, which ties him for 2nd-most among ILBs.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”Linebacker Thomas Davis”]

Kuechly is the best player on the Panthers’ defense, but Davis is the heart and soul of the bunch. When he was hobbled against the Steelers, and held out against the Ravens, it adversely affected the entire unit.Since Davis is in an outside linebacking group that includes some of the league’s best pass rushers, his limited sacks (2) are one of the reasons he’s overlooked. But he has racked up 78 tackles, eighth-most among OLBs despite missing a game. And while few fans likely take off-the-field actions into account when they cast their votes, it’s worth noting Davis is the Panthers’ Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee for the 4th straight year.[accordion_item open=”true” title=”Tight end Greg Olsen”]141005 Panthers v Bears_0622Like Davis, Olsen has never been to a Pro Bowl. But Olsen has never put up stats like he has during this, his 8th season. He’s set career bests for most receiving yards in a regular-season game not once, but twice: 105 yards vs. Packers, 119 yards vs. Eagles. And with five games left, he needs just 18 receptions and 125 yards to break his single-season records for Panthers’ tight ends.Among the league’s tight ends, Olsen ranks:

  • 2nd, receiving yards (719)
  • 3rd, receiving yards per game (65.4)
  • 3rd, receptions for 1st downs (40)
  • 4th, receptions (56)
  • 4th, receptions per game (5.1)
  • 5th, yards after the catch (271)

And of course, Olsen has played in every game, even when he was hobbled by two sprained ankles.[/accordion]Fan voting is just one-third of the Pro Bowl selection process. Coaches and players make up the other two parts. But since it the Panthers may not be playing in early January, your vote could help Kuechly, Davis and/or Olsen be on the field later in the month.
