Carolina Panthers News and Coverage for the Digital Age

Nordstrom, Target or Dollar Store: 2015 Safeties

The most memorable comments from Dave Gettleman’s end of season press conference were a glimpse into the Carolina Panthers’ free agency budget: “Last year we were shopping in the dollar store. This year we may be able to move up in class a little bit.”When asked if that meant the Panthers could go shopping at a high-end place like Nordstrom, Gettleman warned: “I said we’re going to move up in class. I didn’t say we’re going to go out and spend big money on a player.”Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a look at free agents who will be available* at Carolina’s positions of need, and at which store the Panthers would likely have to go to if they wanted to land them.Part 1 – WRsPart 2 – OTsPart 3 – Edge RushersPart 4 – Safeties:

*Does not include players who could be cut and become potential targets.

[accordion_item open=”true” title=”NORDSTROM”]Devin McCourty (Patriots)Rahim Moore (Broncos)

  • McCourty would easily be the best UFA safety if he becomes available, but if they can’t work out a long-term deal, the Patriots will likely use their franchise tag on him … The Broncos aren’t expected to pay what Moore wants, and that’s probably a wise choice.

[accordion_item open=”true” title=”TARGET”]Ron Parker (Chiefs)Da’Norris Searcy (Bills)Marcus Gilchrist (Chargers)Antrel Rolle (Giants)

  • Parker, who was on the Panthers practice squad in 2012, is reportedly looking for $6 million per year. Of course, that doesn’t mean he’ll get it … Searcy will be looking to cash in on his 2014 breakout season, his first as a starter … Gilchrist doesn’t do anything all that special, but he was a dependable starter the past two years … Rolle is 32, but Dave Gettleman could be intrigued by the Giant who never missed a game during his five seasons in New York.

[accordion_item open=”true” title=”DOLLAR STORE”]Louis Delmas (Dolphins)Dawan Landry (Jets)Mike Adams (Colts)Darian Stewart (Ravens)Danieal Manning (Texans)Stevie Brown (Giants)

  • The injury-prone Delmas tore his ACL in December … Landry has a little left, but he’s not a great option … Adams, who turns 34 in March, made the Pro Bowl after the Broncos let him walk … Stewart turned into a solid starter during his first season in Baltimore … Manning started only 11 games the last two years, but he’s somewhat serviceable … Brown lost and then regained his starting job in 2014. Like Rolle, Giants UFAs are always possibilities … you can find more UFA safeties here.

I think the formula of bringing in young talented and quicker talent through the draft is a proven one, we already have our resident veteran in Harper in the backfield directing trafic I’m not sold on spending good salary cap money on players that their old team won’t sign. Use the cap to sign our own good players keeping our nucleus intact. And build through the drafr. Remember the guy that won this year’s super bowl for the Patriots . The was a year 1 udfa.

It seems safeties are sorta like relief pitchers in baseball. Year to year, you never really know what you’ll get out of them. One team’s castoff becomes another team’s gem.
